Right here, right now
They say that the best ref is the one you don't notice but I certainly noticed Halsey but for all the right reasons. Let the game flow, played advantage whenever possible, wasn't too picky but was firm and let the players know he was in control. Assistants could have helped him a bit more though.

Halsey is one of the best in the country - in my view he is better than Webb who I do not rate as highly. Unfortunately the general standard of referees in the Championship are not going to match him week in week out.

Yep, excellent ref last night, although it seemed to confuse the players at times, they are so used to refs blowing his whistle for every minor infringement we slightly lost the advantage as they hesitated expecting a free kick. Videos of last nights ref should be compulsory viewing for other refs on the right way to do things.

He was very good and probably one of the main reasons why the game was so good and end to end

I agree, the ref was excellent last night. You can tell when a ref has a good game when there are no contentious decisions to talk about and at every oppurtunity he seemed to let the game flow.

Did think (Greer?) was tugged back during Cardiff's shocking miss in the first half mind. But as nothing came of it, no problemo

Is this football, post-Olympics? The friendliness has rubbed off on all the football fans, and we'll be applauding referees, and opposition (including Palace), on and off the field like we did for that fortnight in London?

In all seriousness though, yes Halsey had a great game last night. He got berated by those near me the North Stand for a couple of decisions that he had clearly got spot on.

Funny moment when Bellamy was on the ground, and Crofts went in on him catching him in the ribs with his boot. Ref just mimed that it was a 50-50 coming together.

He's probably the first ref to kick Gully in the face as well. In his warm up in the NE corner, he was lying on the ground doing stretches, Gully came and lay next to him for a joke, and he kicked Gully on the beak!

But he could have improved the game immeasurably by giving us a very dodgy penalty when LuaLua went down like a feather in the second half.

Although I am always pleased to see Mark Halsey on a football field now.....

From 2009
Mark Halsey had not eaten for three days, was utterly exhausted but could not hide his elation. The results of a scan taken at the start of last week had shown that the 48-year-old Premier League referee’s throat cancer was in remission.

Three-and-a-half months after being told that he had the worst example of the disease his consultant had ever encountered, Halsey could start planning his comeback to Old Trafford, Anfield, Stamford Bridge and the other major grounds.

Comeback plan: Referee Mark Halsey is hoping to officiate in the Premier League after recent results showed that the 48-year-old's throat cancer was in remission

Chemotherapy since his condition was confirmed in August had weakened his immune system, leaving him vulnerable to a virus, and medical staff had told him it may be another month before he felt well.

He must also undergo daily radiotherapy treatment aimed at stopping the cancer returning. The therapy is due to finish on Christmas Day.

Yet the former St Albans City goalkeeper, who has been devoted to football since he was a teenager, is looking eagerly towards New Year celebrations that will differ from those of the recent past.

On New Year’s Eve 2008 Halsey’s wife, Michelle, was diagnosed with chronic myloid leukaemia, which is treatable but not curable and for which she must take medication for the rest of her life.

Halsey is simply relieved that they have a future together.

‘Hopefully for me and Michelle there’s a better 2010 round the corner,’ he said at his home in Little Lever, near Bolton.

‘It’s not been a very good year for us, a long haul, very emotional and with lots of tears. When I come back on that pitch there will be a few more tears, too.

Bellamy looked up, saw that play was continuing, then started rolling around even more dramatically. It was quite funny.

I would go so far as to sa that last night the ref was probably the best we've had for several years, lets hope he's set a precedent for the rest of the season.
