It was for violence of the tongue.

So, to those who saw the football league show - the two pens should not have been penalties, but what about their earlier claims for penalties?

If they were penalties, all that means is that the ref made even more mistakes.

For crying out loud, how many times??

Dissent- arguing with a decision for example, or sarcastically applauding, perhaps, is a cautionable offence. Foul & abusive language- calling the ref a f***ing twat/cheat, whatever, is a sending off offence.

Amazing how many people don't know the laws of the game

People don't know it because that rule is NEVER put into force. If it was, EVERY single game in the Prem EVERY single week would be abandoned due to red cards.

It is enforced though, we can all recall players getting sent off for foul & abusive language. Didn't Dave Kitson walk at Withdean last season for that offence?

There's a subtle difference between swearing per se and using abusive language aimed at the referee, which is where the line is (supposedly) drawn. If you say "f***ing hell ref", you'd probably get away with it, or maybe get a yellow for dissent. If you call the official a f***ing c*nt or a f***ing cheat, then you should be dismissed. And yes, we've all seen Wayne Rooney or John Terry launching abuse at the referees, but top players have always got away with it.

Taricco evidently broke the rules: he can have no argument, the idiot.

It is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY rarely enforced. I don't think I've EVER seen it enforced at Prem level. Maybe ONCE in 18 years. It's a RARE rule.

You're entirely correct, of course, but that's the thing which I think has puzzled many people. The games you watch week in week out on Sky, the amount of foul language aimed at referees is riduculous, but the players in these games always get away with it.
I'm sure if you looked at games Walton has referee'd in the premier league this season you could find plenty of times he's been abused ON CAMERA. But I can't recall the last red card for dissent in the Premier League.

To be fair to the ref, if i was given a mouthful of abuse i would have sent him off, but then i'd be pretty trigger happy with my cards for any sort of dissent, especially when you get surrounded by players after every little incident with the top end premier league clubs

I don't know how many times, you tell me since you're the one who's saying it a lot, apparently.
tbh as amazing as it is, truly amazing, whichever rule or sub heading the offence may fall under, players getting off for saying a naughty word is a rare occurence. I don't know if Tano's offence was much worse than the usual naughty words uttered by footballers in every fixture that ever takes place, or if it was just that the referee for the match on Saturday was just that much more of a dickhead than all the others. Based on the evidence available I am leaning towards the latter option.

I don't know why I have to say the same thing twice except speaking slightly more slowly the second time, but whatever, it's fine. :)

That still does not condone what Tanno did as 2 wrongs do not make it right. What he apparently said or did is an automatic red card for which he will be suspended irrespective of any defence that he may enter about the ref swearing or making mistakes. I can understand the frustration of him and Marcus Painter about the ref using that sort of language and expecting it to be ok for Tanno to use the same but the FA will not and cannot be seen to allow it and overturn the red card..

Correct and I would have been happier to hear Gus say that Tanno was wound up by the fef`s decision but was a little bit silly as well.

At park level in sussex you get sent off instantly for swearing at the ref. Swearing in front of the ref gets you a yellow.

In the professional game it's different, players swear at the ref all the time and it seems to be tolerated.

I have just managed to see the highlights on the BBC, and the ref and the decisions were appauling, I have no problem admitting to penalties when we give them away, but the first one was clearly outside the box, and the second one calde hit the ball, and lambert tripped over it. Terrible decisions!

I suppose the difference is...if you say "f***ing hell ref", or "what the f*** was that, ref?" or "for f***'s sake ref", that's deemed to be different to "you're a f***ing cheat ref" or "you c*nt ref", does that make it clearer? It's the abuse aimed AT the officials that they're supposed to clamp down on, not the other stuff which I suppose is more everyday use of the language.

You don't get red cards for it all that often because most footballers are evidently not stupid enough to call a referee a cheat. They know exactly how far they can push it before it crosses the line. Frankly if a referee allows a player to stay on after hearing him call him a cheat then he's bottled it anyway (I'm pretty sure I've seen John Terry call an official a cheat).

But whether they're always enforced or not, Tanno evidently broke the rules, so he can't complain can he?

Paul Gascoigne got sent off in 1990 for foul and abusive language directed towards the ref.. I believe it was the first of it's kind.
