i thought the ref was only supposed to stop the game for head injuries so why do they keep blowing up when players feign leg injuries on the floor? If he let play go on they would soon miraculously recover. He could also have nipped the time wasting in the bud much earlier as they were doing it from the first half. A very weak referee who ruined the game as a spectacle for match paying fans with his lack of control of the game.

As for Villa well got their 3 points but Christ how depressing must it be to watch that anti football shit every week, particularly when you think how much money has been pumped into that squad.

If I know football fans right, they're probably not all that depressed...

In fairness he let play go on when Solly was rolling around in the penalty area.

This ‘taking in turns to get a yellow’ tactic needs to be addressed by the rule makers. Refs should be allowed to give a player a red card (for a yellow card offence) if his team has been guilty of getting persistent yellow cards for time wasting.

Kavanagh was the worst ref I’ve seen out here for a very long time, and Villa exploited his weakness.
Football in general now has become a joke where players go down at the slightest touch and the refs fall for it every time and give a free kick - Villa are the worst team I’ve seen doing this. This just encourages players to do it more because they know they will always get a free kick. Someone needs to get a grip of this because this is killing the game and making it a joke.

This ‘taking in turns to get a yellow’ tactic needs to be addressed by the rule makers. Refs should be allowed to give a player a red card (for a yellow card offence) if his team has been guilty of getting persistent yellow cards for time wasting.

I think the time wasting issue is the next major one FIFA & the law makers are going to deal with.

Not easily solved however and probably a few years away.

Very weak. Started waving card around to no effect much too late in the game. The Villa approach to the 2nd half... these are the issues that fans want solved. The FA try to set the agenda on other, frequently irrelevant matters.

Players should’ve been charging up to and crowding the referee, forcing a VAR referral. We are still far too nice. Solly got taken out - no reaction from our boys. Summed up our afternoon, they were not up to the task on the day and Villa really wanted it.

If you read my post, I'm saying they could quite easily deal with but don't. That's the problem. If a goalie takes too long for his first two goal kicks or, when easily gathering the ball insists on falling to the ground, book him at that point, not when there are two minutes left in the game. Cash got booked for his first bit of time wasting with a throw in yet Martinez got away with it right up until nearly the end of the match. The ref's need to apply the rules and you could eliminate it. As for Players going down, what I would change is if the match is stopped then it should be mandatory that they player is seen by the physio and as a consequence will need to leave the field.

Key to solving the timewasting issue is some intelligence being applied and referees taking into account motives for player actions.

Every spectator in the stadium, and on screen, knows at every moment in a modern football match exactly how much each team wants to waste time and which team wants to get on with the game.

The team who would like to waste time have to behave the same as a team getting on with the game. Quick straight yellow for first and every subsequent very minor offence contravening this requirement. Treat them like schoolkids until the ridiculous habits are eradicated at all levels of football.

The above solves all issues to do with goalkeeper time-wasting and players messing around with throw-ins, free kicks, substitutions, etc

Remaining issue is injury based time-wasting. Not sure what the very best answer to this is but there are various options that would be much better than the current joke. A philosophy that prioritises allowing the game to flow and punishing fakers would be at the heart of it.

Yeah I think I agree with this. Not sure I want us to be cheating, but being angry about injustices is another matter.
Tross kicking the ball out yesterday is the perfect example. Just play on.

We never seem to get a "Homer" ref.
The ref doesn't expect a hard time from us and tends to be less influenced by the Home crowd, or looking to "level things up".

I read your post, my point was how could they easily deal with it if across the footballing world these dark arts, time wasting etc. is endemic? If it was just a few isolated games or teams I could agree with you. Players take a booking, doesn't matter how early, they'll take it then that individual player will be careful and someone else will time waste. It's all subjective too, all a judgement with players putting on performances that could earn a gong at the academy awards.

What people don't realise is how difficult refereeing is, and you throw professional cheating into it and it is being made an impossible job. All this talk of the refs aren't good enough and the vilification of individuals needs to be turned around and ask the question 'why is a professional game of football so difficult to referee?' – the answer to that is so many players are looking to cheat, pure and simple.

The game has moved on and yet we are still left with a yellow card and a red. The footballing authorities for some reason seem unwilling to transform in-game punishments.

Given it is the supposed best league in the world with an absolute fortune rolling around in it, the levels of officiating are truly awful. The refs seem so weak and scared of their own shadow.

Yep, McGinn saw it coming & leant into it but it was a definite pen. I love Dunky but that was a very poor decision from him.

It's a bit of a 'catch 22' with Dunky's customary lunges. Many times we've marvelled at him making a saving block but there are clear downsides. Aside from the penalty yesterday if you look at their winner there's an argument that he should have stayed on his feet. Love his commitment needs to be a little more judicious in use of that lunge.

60 min effective game time is probably the best solution, yes.

But easy... I don't know. Its a pretty big change.
