Redundancy

Get yourself mortgage protection. Pays up for 6 months!! Your redundancy pay off should tied you over the summer!

there's typically a caveat along the lines of " are you aware of any pending redundacies" - if you tick yes they won't cover you, if you tick no and claim they will most likely check out the circumstances and not pay out.

The insurance companies are pretty good at keeping hold of people in the UK who are adept at declining claims.

I wanted redundancy a while back but not convinced it is the right answer and hope to carry on working to keep the pension up and running.

Hope you survive

My company has announced that there will be at least 850 job losses in Management & Support roles. I fulfil both criteria there! They are not telling anyone where the cuts will be, so we just have to plod along in uncertainty.

What a great atmosphere to work in. All in the name of maximising 'shareholder value'. This comes a week after we completed a major piece of work demonstrating that unless we recruit, we will miss all of our service targets!

Don't you just love the shortermism of major companies?

I am so sorry to hear that, mate, and you are right it is terrible working in that state of uncertainty. We were all threatened with redundancy in my company 5 years ago, and a lot of people moved to our London offices thinking they would be out of a job. Next thing you know they have trebled the workforce.

Hope it all works out for you.

Ok! I was made redundant after 16 years of impossible targets and idiotic management, my stress ceased overnight.

I took the redundancy money, a year off and went back to college. Had a pretty wild time of it, more time on the beach than I should have, retrained and started again.

I caught my original salery up in 2 years, and am now in the career I always wanted, and have seen a lot more of this planet than I ever imagined on job related travel.

They are right, take the summer off, go travelling and follow your dreams. :drink:

Best of luck

Zef, you said that you bank with HSBC, doesn't that stand for something like Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp, I wouldn't bargain on a bank with a name like that maintaining any form of loyalty to the UK.

Whilst on the subject of drawing mortgage insurance and having a break before returning to work, my advice would be don't bank on them paying out. My brother was made redundant late last year and only went back into full employment in May, the mortgage insurance company didn't pay out and because he had a reasonable pay off he didn't qualify for any unemployment benefit, so much for the welfare state, made him ask what he had been paying taxes for.

Like me though you may be made redundant at the right time of the year! Enjoy a long hot summer of drinking and fishing and then get a new job in September.

Marvellous scenes!

My advice is enjoy the time off. Keep applying for jobs and something will turn up. I had to take a hefty pay cut but my work is only 15mins from my house and the work I'm doing is far better for my CV!

Chin up mate, it's not all bad.

I agree with Lammy. Perfect time of year to get made reduntant. I'd also agree with the posters who recommend you become self-employed, if the line of work you do makes that an option. Of course it's an initial worry, but believe me, loads of people are doing it, and once you've been cut free from a major corporation that is constantly eyeing your job to see if it can be outsourced or cut back for a quickshareholder buck then you'll never want to go back to being a 'permie'. You'll certainly never fall for that 'Our Greatest Asset Is Our People' bullshite ever again.

Wasn't being glib by the way about it being the perfect time of year to get made redundant. Get your CV up-to-date and send it out here:

Apply via email for any jobs that take your fancy in the morning, include a mobile number for contact during the day and hit the beach - or better still, just hit the beach and check your messages when you get home in time for tea.

My six-month contract ends on 16th July. Cue to take the Summer off and start looking for a new one in the last week of August ready for a September 1st start.

Perfick.
