Nearly every major metropolitan area now has a at least a few breweries that make a whole range of non-weasel-piss beer. And because it's local, it's likely to be fresh.

Here in Maine there are half a dozen reliable regional brewers -- Shipyard, Gritty McDuff's, Casco Bay, Allagash, Geary's, Stone Coast -- and these are obtainable in gas stations and supermarkets, right next to the -- gag-- Budweiser, not just in bars and restaurants. And Sam Adams is as ubiquitous as any of the national brands.

In fact, here's a bottle of Gritty's Scottish Ale at home with my name on it, you will excuse me.

(The beer culture in the Southern states run more towards national brands, and thin, thin lagers. Might be the heat.)

Why even bother with any yank "ales" when there are enough good imports to be had.

The only beer I drank in America that was any good was from a micro-brewery in a pub called the Brew Moon in Boston, was really pretty damn good, oh and Upper Canada Dark Ale....from, errr...Canada.
