This is in fact one of the things that makes baseball different and so great, because it isn't meaningless at all. A try is a try, a goal is a goal, a basket is a basket (though could be two points or three), but in baseball it is possible to score four runs with a single sweep of the bat.

And yes, you can do the same in cricket, but seven or so runs isn't normally enough to win a game.

i LOVE the feeling of tension when the bases are loaded

thats the thing i love about baseball, the game can change so much in just one hit

Because you aren't hanging around scratching yer arse every 3 minutes or so because of commercial breaks on televised games? It ruins the NFL

And a football game doesn't change with one kick of the ball?

Well its an amateur tournament, and due to the systems of sports in the States, they were unable to find a method of selecting a team. That is all.

pretty unfair on ice hockey - theres a shit load of passion in that. although i agree that the likes of basketball and american football are all about entertainment more than supporting your team, which makes them pretty SHIT

I don't understand how someone who has such an open-minded view of Baseball and Hockey can be so narrow-minded and condescending about American Football.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL is a sport, the NFL is a particular league of it. It is played for pure passion and honour at all levels from shitty fields in this country to colleges and high schools in America, where a school football team can represent the entire hopes and dreams of a community (See the film Friday Night Lights). Yes, the NFL is very corporatised etc etc, but its the best players of that sport, and I would say the same about Premiership football. If I was an outsider watching Ronaldo et al prance around a field on 150k a week, and stadiums full of people from completely different towns to the one playing, I'm not particularly sure I'd think it was so great.

You've hit the nail on the head, ATFC, but only in passing.

You casually mention it's 'corporatised' as though that was a side issue, but for many, it's THE main issue as to why American sports are not as popular as they could be.

There are many aspects of American culture which have crept - sorry, blasted - their way into British culture, but the fact is, we are European (geographically, politcally and most importantly culturally), and as such find these creping American corporate issues a bit vulgar.

Why, for instance, do so many people find such disdain with the Premiership? It's not the politics of envy, it's more that that amount of corporate greed is alien to our culture, and frankly, we want our own culture back - and it's not going to come back until the Premiership implodes. It's one of the reasons why, for instance - to take a bit more of an extreme example - people find it so good to go to Lewes or Eastbourne Borough. That kind of experience is what we grew up with, and what we find comfort in.
