The Madejski is already the best stadium outside the top flight. Dislike tham as I do, they are still a model of exactly what the Albion should be looking to achieve. Its not happened overnight for them, but now they're in the Prem its exactly what we'd be wanting to hear from our chairman if we were in their position. Its all about bums on seats, and they'll definately sell out for the big games, so why not look to expand ?

I think the joke was - only if they stay up. Madjeski should be looking to expand anyway. They must ride the crest of the wave here, if they want to be able to compete without having to rely heavily on 'outside' finance.
If they get relegated, they won't expand? What if they go back up again? Would they wait and see, again?
You are right that we must model ourselves on Reading. They have done extremely well. Shame that we didn't have similar sites in and around Brighton & Hove for our stadium.

just seems to me that if any other club in whatever league wants to improve/build a new ground...............they get permission.........let's hope the Lib Dems get voted out in the May local elections

Have to agree with Easy. Much as I hate them (and it's more to do with having to leave near the place and put up with plastic fans who have suddenly stopped supporting Liverpool, Man Utd etc and are now die hard Reading fans) they have been very sensible in the way they've gone about rising up the leagues. The players they have bought have generally been cheap with the occasional big spend slowly gathering the squad.

I'm just WORRIED that if we are ever in a similar position we WON'T be able to expand Falmer and will be stuck with a 23,000 capacity forever. It's not even 25,000

Hillsborough and Forest are excellent grounds in the traditional sense I'd agree. But I think that out of a crop of new stadiums that have been built over the last 10 years or so, the Madejski is everything you'd want in a new ground. Steep banks of seats, all completely enclosed, makes it a real cauldron. That season when we won the D2 championship we got a 0-0 there in front of a full house, and the place was absolutely rocking.butchy said:

One of the best managers in the country, a decent young squad, decent stadium and once in the Premiershite they'll get a full house for most games.
Add to that the fact that there will be more than three teams worse than them....

Readings ground has a bit of character about it which makes it a decent football stadium. Southamptons ground looks the same no matter what stand you are in, as do most of the other modern stadiums.
That is why I think Falmer will work as a stadium. Do to it being built into the hill and limited in size the two main stands will be different designs, there will be split tiers and steep banks of seating. Should make for a more traditional atmosphere.

Yes, their crowds have miraculously rocketed this year, but what team wouldn't in their position?
You can't blame them for thinking about expansion: given that their financial security apparently depends on Madejski's personal cash, they need to find as many ways as they can of maximising their income and creating future revenue streams before he pops his clogs, or decides he's had enough and ups sticks to a mansion in Bermuda with Cilla.
I don't much like Reading, but they are a model for other small clubs. OK, other small clubs with rich blokes as backers.
I don't think they'll find survival as easy as they think (they seem to be looking too much at Wigan and not enough at Sunderland, and virtually none of their players have Premiership experience) but hey, let them have their moment.

For all the critisism of the "plastic fans" let face it, Madjeski set out to get his 4th division club into the Premiership. To do that it goes without saying he would have to attract more fans, and he has done exactly that. If I was wearing my hat right now I'd take it off to him.
The "Plastic Fans" deserve a bit of credit too, they've got off their bums, stopped watching the box for their football and gone out to see it live, and look where it's got them, the Premiership.

The Mad Stad's a nasty ground, no atmosphere, at least Elm Park had character. Reading fans are so fickle, they'll be eeking away after a couple of defeats next season.
