McGhee slams Reading fans after heavy Madejski Stadium defeat
6.50pm, Saturday 10th December 2005
Brighton boss Mark McGhee launched a blistering attack on Reading supporters after seeing his side suffer a 5-1 defeat at Madejski Stadium.
The ex-Reading manager fumed, "What was the crowd today, 18,500? That sums it up. If Brighton had a stadium like this and we were going up, this place would be hanging from the rafters.
"The Reading people need to have a look at themselves and get 25,000 here, and give a good team, a good manager and a good Chairman proper support. They sat there quiet for an hour and didn't get behind their team other than giving me some stick.
"This club deserves 25,000, not 18,000. They're top of the league, playing fantastic football, scoring goals, but all they can do is sit out there and give me stick. Says it all."
McGhee was equally unhappy with the afternoon's referee, Paul Taylor, who send off debutant defender Michael Elphick early in the second half and then awarded a penalty against Guy Butters.
He said, "The game finished as contest with the sending off, which I thought was harsh. I hope the referee will look at it and rescind it.
"By booking the boy in the first place the referee has shown no understanding of what's going on. It's a boy making his debut, he's enthusiastic, and the referee might have had the experience to take him to one side and have a word with him.
"We also don't think it was a penalty. My team don't think it was a penalty, and I don't think Dave Kitson even thinks it was a penalty. He went over easily and it's up to the referee to make a judgement."
Until that point, McGhee had been reasonably pleased with his team's display, claiming, "For 44 minutes our strategy was spot on. We came here to try to win the game, with three up front, we tried to be positive and take the game territorially.
"It worked fine and we denied them their usual space, and the first goal was a disappointing one to concede. But if they get help from referees like they did today, Reading will have no problems."
maybe if he spent more time telling the team what they were supposed to be doing and not complaining about the formation then we wouldnt be getting raped
The three up front puzzles me somewhat when it was f***ing clear to everyone in the ground, we had little Leon upfront on his own, trying to win headers in the air aginst Sonko
Unless of course, he counts having wingers, which means we had 3 upfront
