Did you know that if you keep expanding your family the local council will keep expanding your home for you?

The local council is trying to re-house a family. They have SEVEN children with an EIGHTH on the way. Mother's partner does not work. They are currently in a three bedroom Housing Association property. Due a lack of affordable housing of the necessary size the Council is trying to re-house them into a SEVEN bedroom house as a private rent. Not surprisingly the family like the house. The rent will be in excess of £1500 A MONTH

Over to the good people of NSC. Perhaps you can suggest how this family can be helped? :)

I the mothers' partner parent to all of the children...?

Of course he should be working (he seemingly has a kid on the way), however I can't help but wonder if child support should be coming from other fathers' too?

The whole system is a huge failure. People should not be 'rewarded' for collecting children. It is a disgrace that the taxpayer is footing the bill for many unruly people who do not seem to understand the concept of contraception or contributing to society.

so do you think people in social housing should only have the standard 2.4 children and then be booted to ther kerb or sterilised? and only those wealthy/fortunate enough to have a ten bedroom house should have eight children?

I was wondering this too. Surely the father only has the legal responsibility to support his own children (which is why I asked)? If they are his own children, then yes he should do his hardest to support them (and probably even if they aren't) however this shouldn't affect his right to reproduce.

I would be interested to hear all of the facts.

People should only have the amount of children they can afford. We have so many budgetary shortfalls and so many people taking the system for a ride.

There is that chap currently locked in a battle to gain funding for his life extending drugs, yet the money is not there. Why? Because we are throwing good money after bad on people like this.

(NB Sorry if that sounds a bit Daily Mail)

Let me say right now that I cannot give you any more info on this for confidentiality reasons

Sorry Starry but whatever happened to personal responsibility? Why should the rest of us pick up the pieces?

i can afford all my children right now (number 6 arriving soon) but next year my company might fold, i might get sick, something awful might happen to mrs starry.
next year i might not be able to afford my children.

there but for the grace of god and that.

we have social housing in this country (and it has plenty of faults) but we do not discriminate on the basis of number of spawn.

i dare say the number of (and going daily mail) teenage mums who are getting housed every single week in one/two bed properties all year long costs far more than £1500 a month, but because they are only with one or two children it does not cause that wow factor that a family with eight does.

maybe they had personal responsibility and something bad happened.

that happens with everyone though, a single mum with one child, this family, me with my flock of little starrys, you and your family.

just not sure why this is any worse or should get people more ranty than the many, many other people getting housed who do the teen/baby/social housing/benefit thing.

Slightly at a tangent but my local council have informed me that although I am currently a local resident and British citizen I won't be entitled to a Council House (thankfully I don't need one) when I get married as my wife and her daughter will be immigrants.

I wasn't too surprised however after waiting a month I have yet to have an answer to the question I put to them. 'How many council tennents are not EEC residents ?'

I am normally a bit of a fencesitter when it comes to these issues:

As a young (23 year old) worker, in my first proper job after Uni, I often only just make ends meet with the rent, bills, council tax etc. Therefore nothing annoys me more than people who bleed the system dry.

However, as a fairly liberally minded person, I honestly believe that it is entirely correct that the state help support the worst off people in society.

Hum... do I get a prize for least controversial (and most boring) post of the day?

I think the point is that some people carry on procreating safe in the knowledge that they won't be paying for their offspring, the Great British tax payer will. Given the number of unwanted children and unsuitable parents personally I think people should have a license to start a family, why should I subsidise other peoples' shagging ?

Of course, there is no solution to the problem, but it is made far too easy for people to demand that the state to look after them.

Obviously your first point is a different kettle of fish as you can't really plan ahead for unseen circumstances.

On your last point, I have ranted about the single mother syndrome before. I guess some people are jsut destined to take and not give.

Actually it's more a case of what they give up that's the problem. Is contraception (and the morning after pill) so hard to get hold of ?
