This, of course, is the problem with DAB radio; you either get perfect reception or none at all. I will rue the day when we have it imposed on us.

clue here in the word DIGITAL. A signal made up of a stream on 10101010101010101 coding needs to be quite powerful and precise compared to an analogue wave which can fade signal in and out

that's television not radio. I shouldn't think radio will fully switch to Digital until 2015 at the earliest

The 2015 target date for digital radio switchover is now out of the window. The Department for CMS (Culture , Media & Sport NOT Craig Mackail-Smith) are now pencilling in 2017 as the trigger date when digital penetration goes over the required percentage. It also looks likely the switchover will be in regional phases similar to the DTT exercise and take 3 years. There are 130 million analogue radios (home and in-car) in the UK which will need scrapping. France are not bothering with a phased switchover for their digital TV services , the analogue signal gets the chop overnight on November 29th.
