I just don't know where it starts and stops, where are the boundaries

If you do not know where the boundary lies do not try and find out. That said, most people seem capable of staying on the right side.

They seem to deal with these cases very quickly. The ones which I read in the papers seem to be done and dusted within a few weeks.

True, and credit to the legal system for it. I guess the facts of the case are pretty irrefutable. The police don't need to gather evidence, they just print off the guys Twitter comments, and take it to court.

A fair comment, but a lot of me thinks if you act a complete bellend you stand a chance of being unlucky one day. There is a very clear message here.

He has been kicked out of university and made to look a national embarrassment and will struggle to find a job with many employers when they do a search on him, 56 days touching his toes for Mr Big in the showers on top of that seems a bit excessive, and I'm a leftie!

Today, I would like to share a new feeling with you.

I agree with you all. It's kinda weird. Angry fingers all ready to go to war with someone I disagree with, and nothing. Not to worry, I'll find another thread.

Yes, burgle houses and in some cases, download childporn, with f***ing impunity, you wont get any time, we'd rather waste resources on locking up a fool who didnt physically harm anyone but made a prick of himself by posting racist comments on a social media site .

You have a point, and I agree with your sentiment. But, if I went into a pub and acted a cock and had my face punched in for my troubles few would feel sorry for me. Same as this guy. He acted a cock and he was very unlucky. Dont be a bellend.

The difference between burglary cases and this specific case is that there are years of precendent around burglary cases. Social media is a relatively new phenomenon, so the judge is clearly setting a harsh precednet early. Clearly the right thing to do.

I'm all for judges having some latitude in sentencing, but this is basically sending out the message that racism , albeit electronically , is a more serious crime than burglary, or in some cases posession of child porn, or carrying a knife.........it's not, its an attempt to appease a vociferous minority, whilst we sweep various other ills and wrongdoings under the carpet.

Then the years of precedent are clearly wrong, and I dont need to be a member of the bar to know that.

Don't be a bellend is certainly a good mantra we could all do with saying over and over again in life, and when posting on social network sites.

As for your example, your injuries would clear up a lot quicker than this guy will get past the shame, embarrassment, prison record, loss of university place etc, when in reality he's done no more than an internet version of walking into a pub and acting a cock.

The worry is there are plenty of NSCers who wander in here and act like a cock. Done it myself, we all have our radar off kilter from time to time. Sobering lesson eh?

Yes, well put. That is exactly what it is. Collymore receiving abuse, George Michael receiving abuse, even us via various other supporters, doesn't get the coverage, but the crime is the same, Shirley. It just seems to me like every ELSE has blown this up to the point of the fella getting 56 days, which isn't really how the law should work in my view.

Bit of a waste of a prison space if you ask me. I think the second he appeared in court he'd realised what he'd done.
A hefty fine and a huge whack of community service would probably have done.

Interesting though, how prison can be just a few tweets away. Interested to see how the Police deal with future cases such as this. They can't imprison everyone.

How unserious do you think criminal racism is?

i see what your saying but i think all sentancing is too lenient in general... Id rather see the 56 days sentance than another slap on the wrist...

Maybe seeing the sentencing for these racist twitter comments will push up the sentencing for other crimes like child porn, burglary up..

With respect, if someone called you a niggerloving cocksucker on NSC, we would take action.

Is that we he said?

The reporting so far is not that helpful, it focuses on the offensive comments he made and not what he said that was racist................the prosector read out the racist comments he made so.............

John Terry must be shitting bricks.

The issue is that serious crime is not being dealt with properly, not that some bellend has got a short spell in the slammer.

Obviously nowhere near as serious as the offences i mentioned , as I posted on this thread previously, why is this treated so seriously , when other acts, such as burning poppies and causing a breach of the peace by abusing homecoming soldiers are treated with what a majority of people would surely regard as astonishing leniency ? I also wonder why the subject of this thread attracts such vitriol from the left leaning posters on here , when they had virtually nothing to say about the poppy burners .

I agree, however they are not easily changed.

This is definitely a case of nipping something in the bud before it gets worse, so mentioning sentences for other crimes is irrelvant in this case.
