What is the advantage of advancing in grades. Looking at Sundays card the Flyer won £114 for winning the Grade A7 race but the dog who won the A4 only received £5 more for winning.

I guess the better the dog the high grade in races in but in terms of prize money it seems that its better to continue to win in a lower grade than coming second all the time in a higher grade.

Are dogs forced to go into higher grades once they have reached a certain standard ?

To get to open races you have to move through the grading system first, then once you get to open class you can race against dogs from other stadiums and also the prize money goes up a lot, the average open race is £500 to the winner. The dogs are graded on the times they produce, so all the dogs have an equal opportunity to win the race. And dogs have to move up grades or else the same dog would keep winning and the bookies couldn't form a market.

The flyer will almost certainly go up to A6 grade now having won in A7. Although saying that i saw from previous races that he has often clocked under 31 seconds and not been penalised and his winning time on sunday was 31.02 so maybe not???

Its more about the dog's performance than times Gus.
As a general rule if a dog wins then he'll be upgraded. Usually one grade, but if the dog wins very easily and is improving then it might be put up 2 grades.
You'll have to wait and see how he gets on in A6. If he wins again he'll go up to A5, but if he gets beaten a long way for 5 or 6 races he'll probably get dropped back to A7 again.
