"Whitechapel - A tad aggressive" indeed - so anyone who hasn't heard of somebody that you happen to know about is a cretin? Well, I've got loads of stuff in my musical collection that I'm bloody certain you won't have heard of either - does that make you a cretin too?

It's a sad day when somebody dies, for their friends and family - and in this case it would appear to be for fans too. So, RIP is fine (and RIP from me too, though I had never heard of him before) but not really an excuse to start calling other people cretins.

Not knowing someone is fine, what I’ve never understood (and who my comment was aimed at) is people who feel the need to open an RIP thread just to tell people they haven’t heard of the person in question. It happens quite a lot in here and it’s absolutely rife on Twitter etc.

Not knowing someone - fine.
Not knowing someone and paying respect - fine
Not knowing someone and going out of your way to tell people who did know about them that you hadn’t heard of them - Cretin.

Sorry if I didn’t word it well, no offence meant

Well quite.

I can remember when Lil Peep died and one of the gammons on here made a joke of it. Someone then captured that on Twitter and the whole shitstorm kicked off again. Someone's 21 year old child died FFS.

MF Doom was my age and, in his own way and sphere, more influential than half the people involved in RIP threads on here that I haven't seen the need to comment on.

Glad at least someone knows where I’m coming from!

A modern household name could die and there would be some smartarse within the first few pages revelling in the fact their grasp on popular culture is so thin that they haven’t heard of said person. A thread for a relatively underground rapper is going to attract those kind of posts even more. I’m not saying GT49 would do that, but we all know someone would eventually do it.

As you say, it’s someone’s son, brother, father. But even if they’re not going to see it, a musician can leave such a mark on someone’s life that somebody who has never met them is still going to be pretty cut up about it. F*ck me, I’m going to be a mess with Mike Skinner dies. Musicians, actors or athletes can leave a Mark on thousands of people they’ve never met. Bragging you don’t know them in a thread dedicated to them is a c*nts trick.

Any chance the sanctimony could subside for a thread

Best ever opening to an album?

https://youtu.be/pCRjJxYSPRc

It’s certainly up there.

Anyway I posted one earlier but I used to be addicted to these videos which highlighted his internal rhymes

Such a complex writer, you can certainly see his influence in a lot of artists that straddle the mainstream/underground border (El-P, Earl Sweatshirt, Joey Bada$$)

No, you didn't.

It certainly didn't look like that. Never heard of him - so therefore a cretin? OK, you take your view on what 'no offence' means.

“Expect this thread to be full of the usual cretins saying they don’t know who he is”

If you had came in the thread, realised you didn’t know who he was and said nothing then my message wouldn’t have applied to you, would it?

Anything to be offended though.

Don’t bother replying, because I won’t be. This isn’t the thread for amateur dramatics.

Edit: if you want to discuss it further then my PM’s are open, let’s save the thread for discussing a brilliant artist who is no longer with us.

Just had a similar discussion with junior CWWW, I had vaguely heard of him and he calls me out, saying he is top 5 rappers of all time. Immediately reply what about Dre, snoop, nas, rakiim etc but I am an old idiot for not really knowing this dude.My son has a massive knowledge of music for an 18 year old but also has massive gaps in knowledge.

I think any top 5 shout depends on what criteria you’re using really. Obviously MF didn’t have the impact of a Dre, or the commercial appeal of a Snoop, or even the longevity of a Jay Z. However if you judged it burley on how good they were at rhyming then MF probably has to be in a Top 5, if not a top 3.

If he’s someone you’d like to dive in to a bit more then I’ve posted a couple of videos where someone goes through and highlights every internal rhyme or scheme in some of his songs. Really helps you appreciate how dense his writing is. There’s also this great video by Vox about the best rhymers in Hip-Hop too

Oh and your sons lucky, when my old man found out my main musical passion was hip-hop he just told me I wasn’t black and that was it. :lolol:

Not an officianado, I would probably class myself as an indie kid. In the 80s/ early 90s I would be just as happy going to hip hop nights as indie nights. Grew up with public enemy , de la soul, Eric B and rakim, tribe called quest, NWA , wu tang etc. Maybe a I am a bit old and narrow minded but I do not see any huge moves in the genre. But that can be said for most music, it just feels very static since 2000s some good stuff has been released but the tribal identity and movements have been lost and new music has suffered.

I'd guess I'm of a similar age ... I am 49 going on 50 (that should probably be on the songs from musicals thread) ... I lost track when I stopped going to clubs about 15 years ago. It's not music I listen to at home apart from this, because it's ****ing extraordinary

That said the new Run the Jewels album is superb,

anyway RIP, very sad news

Can we have some more of his videos posted please?

I'm not a fan of hip hop so apart form knowing his name I know very little of his music. I've liked what I've heard so far on this thread though...so, in his honour/memory, post some more and create a new fan!

Interesting, I'm a fair bit younger (26) and whilst I love all music I genuinely believe that Hip-Hop is one of the only genres that is evolving currently.

If you've lost track over the last 10 years then you've missed the rise of the UK Scene, which is now arguably stronger than the US rap scene. Everyone should listen to Dave at some point!

Although even saying that there's been some frankly incredible albums out of the US too. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid m.A.A.d City & To Pimp a Butterfly, as well as anything by Run The Jeweles for starters. :)

His Czarface meets Metalface project is excellent.

No idea who he is - there seem to be literally hundreds of rappers all with rather unusual stage names , but other than Kayne &
MC Hammer , beastie boys , run dmc , and stormy , I must admit I have no idea who any of them are .
