If you've seen 'Tourfilm' (of the 'Green' Tour) you'll be in no doubt as to their all conquering greatness. Don't judge them too much on the 90s stuff though.

the new 'best of' album isn't really a 'best of' at all, it's more of an 'ok selection of songs' album.

how can it be a 'best of' with the following tracks missing:

near wild heaven
try not to breathe
so fast, so numb
strange currencies
leave

and more importantly:

find the river

i despair sometimes, i do.

Try Not To Breathe simply had to be on there I agree VvT.

Awesome band, how people can not like them I don't know, unless they're judging them on that brief not-so-good period they went through. The last few years' stuff hasn't been brilliant, apart from the new single Bad Day which is quality.

Automatic for the People though is one of my favourite all time albums.

Love their early "IRS days" stuff, none of which is on the current best of obviously. Green and AFTP were also spot on. Been a bit disappointed with their last 2 albums, but the 2 new tracks on the best of are really encouraging!

Cracking band - although contraversially, my favourite album of theirs is 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi'.

Marvellous....

"Orange Crush" and "Stand In The Place Where You Live" are great tracks, their later stuff is dull U2esque Southern FM-ness IMHO.

Never a more honest word spoken, Mr Leary.

I'd agree with that and what Brady's Old Lady wrote above. If you only own three REM albums own 'Document' 'Green' and 'Automatic for the People' and you'll realise what a pile of shite 'Bad Day' really is.

Hey now, little speedyhead,
The read on the speedmeter says
You have to go to task in the city
Where people drown and people serve.
Don't be shy. Your just deserve
Is only just light years to go.

Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
Ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way.
Watch the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.

The ocean is the river's goal,
A need to leave the water knows
We're closer now than light years to go.
