This was the tie breaker from the quiz I attended yesterday. No cheating. Nearest the pin. When was the first penalty scored in an FA Cup Final?

Isn't it stupidly late in the entirety of the tournament which leads me to Wimbledon's v Liverpool?

There was no penalty scored in that cup final. It was famous for the first penalty save, when Dave Beasant saved John Aldridge's spot kick.

I actually know the answer to the question so I won't spoil it for anyone else. It came up in a pub quiz I was doing many years ago.

West Brom scored a penalty in the last minute in the 1954 final against Preston, and won 3-2. I’m sure there must have been one awarded earlier than that though.

First penalty save at Wembley I thought. Got a feeling a pen had been saved prior to 1923. Maybe 1911?

Was it in the 30s when George Mutch scored for Preston. I seem to remember that from a football book I had as a kid?

I'm fairly sure Dave Beasant was the first keeper to save a penalty. The first and, up until the 88 Cup final, only penalty miss came in the 1913 final when a Villa player missed a spot kick against Sunderland but by all accounts it was put wide or over and wasn't saved by the keeper (unfortunately footage of the final that is available doesn't appear to show the penalty).

I know penalties came into being in 1891 (another tie breaker on a work football quiz) and therefore I’m going to say in an actual final it took maybe 20 years to get one so 1911?!
