Is it worth putting ice on a badly swollen twisted ankle 3 hrs after the incident? if so,for how long?

many thanks

Depends on how bad the twist was! If you tore the ligaments and tendons like I did, you could be out from exercise for 4 months and physio! :(

You should raise your foot as much as you can and place an ice-pack on it and put compression on it as well...

Be careful about keeping the ice on too long. Seriously.. it is possible to catch frostbite, which would make the whole thing considerably worse!

Not sure of how long is too long... probably worth Googling it. I'm sure there'll be some advice online - or try NHS Direct.

I'd reccomend getting one of those wrap-around wine bottle coolers (like ice packs) cut it where the join is, and then put it in place with a tubi-grip. Or a bucket of ice, but make sure you don't burn your foot on the ice!

Get some ibuprofen or even better, Voltarol down you to reduce the swelling

Roz did her ankle in more than two months ago.

She's still using the ice packs, even though the plaster has been off for weeks.

Nothing like the optimistic approach to make someone feel better

Will be for a couple of days, best thing you can do is just sit on the sofa all weekend and pyt your bad foot up. There is no quick fix unfortunately. If you play any sports you can forget about doing any of that for 4-6 weeks.

When I did mine some time back, my niece who is a nurse told me to alternate between hot and cold. 10 minutes in ice, 10 minutes in hot water, 10 minutes rest. 10 minutes in ice, 10 minutes in hot water, 10 minutes rest and so on. Worked a treat.
