[Albion] Question re Europa Qualification - Group Stage

scooter1

How soon is now?
Can someone please clarify..
If we top the group we go straight into the last 16 knock-out, correct?
If we come second in the group we go into the group stage playoff? If we lose that game, are we out out or do we drop into the Conference knock-out stage?
If we come 3rd in the group we drop into the Conference knock-out stage?

Thanks

Bhafc Win the group = straight through to last 16 draw on 23rd Feb
We would be seeded (means we get to play at home in the 2nd match) and it cannot be against an English team

Bhafc finish second = we’d have an extra playoff game to play against a 3rd placed team from CL (also can't be against an English team) the draw for this playoff game is on Dec 18th so the opponent hasn’t been predetermined already.

Bhafc win that playoff game = through to last 16 draw on 23rd Feb - We would be unseeded (means we get to play at home first) and cannot be against an English team

Bhafc lose this playoff game = out of Europe (we would not drop to Conference at this stage)

So best result is beat Marseille so we don’t have to play two extra playoff games

It's quite simple

Win against Marseille and we are in the last 16 as we top the group.

Finish 2nd in the group and we are in the Europa League preliminary knock out round where we will face a team who finished 3rd in their Champions League group. Win and we go into the last 16, lose and we are out.

We are guaranteed a top 2 finish so cannot finish 3rd in our group and cannot drop into the Conference League.

Ok thanks.
It seems a bit crap that you have a better chance of pro-longing European involvement by coming 3rd in the group than second, even if it is considered being in a lesser competition...
That's presuming you don't win your respective group, which of course I would prefer we did

It may seem that way, but how many chances should a team get, in cup competition? The whole 'dropping down' thing is bollocks as far as I am concerned.

Come 1st - Not shite
Come 2nd - Bit shite
Come 3rd - Really shite
Come 4th - Total shite.
If you are Not Shite, you get to play the winner of a playoff between a Bit Shite EL team or a Really Shite CL team.
If you are a Bit Shite you have to playoff against a Really Shite CL team and then play a Not Shite EL team if you win. If you lose, you are Total Shite
If you are Really Shite in the EL, you have to playoff against a Bit Shite team in the Conference thingy.
If you are Total Shite, you go home and dream of improving to Really Shite.

This is the last season there will be any dropping down at the end of the group stage. From next season and the new revamped Swiss format (or whatever they call it) for European competitions, you'll only drop into a lower competition during the qualification rounds.

Can't wait to see the length of the threads explaining/complaining/discussing that!

Assuming we get there of course.

I take it the draw from now on is open?

Can we get to the final without playing on the continent?

Newcastle - Knock out.
West Ham - Last 16.
Utd - Quarters.
Liverpool - semi.

How f**king depressing would that be?

We cannot play any other English side until the QF stages.

But that's not actually the case.

If we come second, we are in the last 24 of the Europa League - and have a two-legged game to see if we get into the last 16
If we come third (which we can't now), we would have been in the last 24 of the Conference League - and have a two-legged game to see if we get into the last 16.

As you say, the only reason we're more likely to progress (prolong our involvement in Europe) by coming third is that we will be in a lesser competition. That's a bit like saying that it seems a bit crap that we have a better chance of prolonging our involvement (ie: spending a longer time in the competition) in the FA Cup if we are in League One than if we are in the Premier League - because we have two additional rounds we can play in!
