I've gone as far as connecting the washing machine hose from cold to hot and ran water back up the pipe until it started coming out of the overflow that comes out the side of the loft. The taps then will all run for around a minute but will gradually lose pressure until they completely stop again.

I've tried running the water through the hot WM feed with one tap open, with all taps open, with no taps open but always with the same result.

I really appreciate the advice from people - and if anyone knows a plumber in the Uckfield area that is willing to come out to have a look then please recommend..

Can you take photos of the pipes in your airing cupboard next to the hot water cylinder and post them here?
Can you see a gate valve on the supply to the hot water cylinder?

Air locks are a complete pain even for plumbers like myself, but very difficult to explain how to get rid of the air lock when not actually at the property or seeing photos.

I have seen pipe work clogged up with debris from cold water storage tanks when they have been drained, also gate valves jammed in the closed position, even though the valve handle seems to move.

If you definitely know the tank in your loft was clean before you drained it, or you haven't touched any gate valve in your airing cupboard, you can ignore some of the above.

I need to get back to work now but I'm happy to try and give advice later on here, please let me know.

The cold tank is about 70% full which is the point that the ball valve stops it filling. I've checked the valve and it seems to be ok, more water comes in if i apply gentle pressure to the top of the valve.

I'm completely stuck now and have spent the morning trying to find a plumber that can come out at some point soon.

Top image is a gate valve, you may have 2 in the loft by the tank, in the airing cupboard, some on the supplies to the shower pump and maybe one low down near the cylinder ( ignore this one )

Probably best to empty out the airing cupboard of clothes, towels etc.
The photos you have taken unfortunately don't show what I was looking for.

Did you also see my question about debris in the cold water storage tank?
Have you touched or tried to turn any gate valves?

Thanks, randomly it seems like it’s stated working again. After throwing a strop about it not working and leaving it alone for a few hours it has spluttered back into life.

Thanks for all of your help, I guess it was an air lock after all, but just needed some time to work itself out?

Cheers

You're welcome, good news, sometimes air locks do actually clear on their own, hopefully it won't come back.

Well done NSC! Nobody chipped in with the the usual irritating and now unfunny " have you tried turning it on and off ".
