Tut-tut FG. Just from memory I can tell you this massive game was definitely in season 1969-70. I even remember the headline in the B & H Gazette/Herald; "SO CLOSE, SO VERY, VERY CLOSE.....BUT WOLVES STEAL THE FINAL GLORY"
It's all a blur now but yes, 69/70 under the great FG himself. What a LC run, beating Pompey 1-0, Birmingham 2-0 (both good 2nd div teams) before losing to 1st div Wolves 2-3 having twice led.
Each of those games provided my thern bigest crowd going from 20,000 to 25,000 to 32,000 and I was then hooked on big matches under the lights.
As for the smoke bomb, there were some against Palace in the match mentioned above but also, in the last home game of the 78/79 season in our win over Blackburn. there was talk of an objection and the game having to be replayed so the Goldstone pitch, due to be relaid, was hastilly ploughed up.
