On a wider note, sea fishing is something that l might like to try, I've no real idea though of the best way to get started.

Try a boat out of the Marina or Littlehampton if only a Mackerel hour long trip, the guy will sort you out with tackle and help you unhook your catch. Free lessons on what to look for in a " bite" and how to hook the fish, then you will have an idea what tackle to look out for. Any Rod shop will help you fine tune your tackle needs then the Marina side ams or Shoreham Harbour Arms will be a good place to fish before acquiring the experience for beach fishing.

Boat fishing, though a tad expensive, is the nuts. Your skipper will know the best places for any species you may fancy and a 15 pound Cod line caught is an exciting experience.

Would be the bigger Bass, Mackerel and smaller Bass attack Whitebait by chasing them into the shore and Bigger Bass hit the Mackerel.

I do boat trips once every couple of weeks from Brighton marina (April - Oct typically). Love the reef/rough ground fishing as don’t waste very much time at all steaming, most of the time is actually fishing. Loads of decent bream been about this summer,plus plenty of plaice, gurnard and the odd accidental smoothie - the restrictions on inshore trawling seem to be really making a difference now.

Good point - guy I use rents rods at £10 per trip…..not sure how this compares with other boats. 8-3.30 reef trip is £65, also does 4 hour trips (probably a better option if a first time).

Used to fish West beach at newhaven for bass, using joey flappers. Never got any over 7lb but had a few pouting hitting the 2lb mark and lost a big pollack in the breakers.
I quite miss the sea angling

It's just a guess but it might be smooth hound. I don't fish myself, but my mate says that fishing for smooth hound is good all along this coast.

Crab for Smoothies, once had 5 in about 20 minutes on the same peeler crab bait.

Any idea of the top weights caught beach angling Sussex these days?

I don't keep up with the weights so much. I think the real trophy fish of 10lb + are still thin on the ground but there are loads up to 3-6lb around. If on FB check out Brighton Inshore Fishing run by Robin Howard, he runs a specialist lure boat doing 3-4 4 hour trips a day fishing reefs and bars inshore and out to 3 miles. he usually will get a client their 2 a day42 cm + plus fish and its not unknown for his boat to have 80 odd bass a day.
