Lets be honest its a second rate carrier compared to the Americans Nimitz class carriers - first it should be nuclear powered, have steam catapults and an angled flight deck (both of which were British inventions) we could have then bought conventional F35's with out the complicated lift fan engine or swiveling rear jet pipe! The STOVL F35B's that we are buying are shorter ranged than the F35Cs the us navy is getting! Finally, do with have the fleet to protect the carriers? When they do put to sea they will need a fleet of other ships to protect and supply them and is our ever shrinking navy up to the job? Seems to me pretty much a vanity project for the UK and they will only be able operate in hostile environments under the protective umbrella of the United States Navy!

Portsmouth is a nuclear free city.

Anyone that finds themselves in the Portsmouth vicinity at apx 1400hs and can spare the time should head downtown the round tower or Spice Island as Big Liz is heading in for what will be the last time with a Blue/Red ensign flying!!!

I always think this thread title means HM the Queen is permanently moving to Canada or Australia. I wonder if she moves to the States if Harry does.

If anyone wants to watch the Commissioning of Big Lizzy, it's on the BBC News channel at 11am. God bless her and all who sail in her.

Phoenix Sqd seemed to win the low level bombing competitions every year in the US when I was in the RN. Saw a Buccaneer fly past the ship.... below me! Although I was on the Arks signal deck at the time. Still impressive.

All we need now are some aircraft to put on her, perhaps we can lease back some Harriers from India, failing that there must be a few Buccaneers still flying?
Don't think there are any buccaneers and in any event there is no steam catapult or angled flight deck so you cant really operate conventional aircraft from these new ships.

She's already got a squadron of Merlin helicopters, and should start training with the F35s next year.
