The guy in charge is known as the Commanding Officer, he/she can be any rank, but for big ships at sea such as the QE the CO will be a four ringer with texo being a commander.

I was on the old 'big' Ark Royal, and I remember a picture of us next to, I think the Nimitz, and we looked like its escort destroyer.

Obviously got a few ex-matelots on NSC, looking at this photo and knowing what, for example, the North Atlantic is like how were those planes secured to stop them tipping over or was the flight deck bunded? An awful lot of them look to have their arse ends over the water...

EDIT I have just looked at Wikipedia and they landed a C130 Hercules on it!

When my ex was on the Eagle in 1970, they lost a plane with pilot and observer, as it was taking off. There was no chance of rescuing them as the ship sailed straight over them.

I remember from my offshore days the helicopter pilots wouldn't come near FPSO's if we were rolling around, the buggers!

Yeah, I used to have an epic photo of the Ark bow down in heavy seas...trying to find it again but struggling. Found one of when I was on the Lowestoft (frigate) but not the big girl

I went on the Antrim in Manila when it was doing a Navy Day - would have been August 80 as it was the first day of the football season and I enquired whether the crew could get the results.

I remember going below decks - from memory the results came through by Telex. I ended up going ashore with some of thd guys for a few beers - -good lads.
