Watching it head out of Rosyth on the ITN FB feed. I think its a magnificant ship but not sure that a strategic strike carrier is whats needed in this day and age.

I think the planes are American, and we have pilots training on them.. but just seems a bit over the top for todays warfare, when cruise missiles and the like can pretty much do the same job

A Carrier Strike group gives the UK the ability to project significant soft and hard power anywhere in the world* and is a lot more versatile than a Cruise missile.
*Only if it has planes and enough surface ships to protect it.

I was on the old big Ark in the early 70s, and realise the impact they made but these days not so sure it's that needed
Mmmm not so sure. Considering the fast-evolving political situation and increasing belligerence from Russia I would think a stronger Royal Navy would be a sensible precaution.
"....... with railgun technology is where the next leap forward in naval power is.....
Agreed but I'm ex mob so I'm biased [emoji23]
For the uninformed, like me, what is its major advantage over the old Ark Royal other than probably an update on technology
Which Ark, the 1950s-1970s or the 1970s-2000s( ski jump deck)?
