Hopefully FH does but I am struggling to recall a pre season where we were making so many changes with one game to go before the season kicks off whilst missing so many of the previous season’s starters

Wait till a few games in the proper season before you start the bed wetting.

My big takeaway was that I should never watch pre-season friendlies.

I know what they're for, I know we have a load of players missing and I know that you shouldn't read anything into them.

But they're available to watch so I end up watching them and despite knowing the above I still end up reading far too much into them. And then worrying when we look a long way from decent.

I went to get a look at the new players and get a feel for the new manager's playing style.
It was all very encouraging.

All the new wingers are very exciting indeed.
If Solly's time is done, we have the replacements we needed last season.
Mitoma - rusty as hell.
Baleba is still improving and definitely has the potential to be an absolute beast of a player.
Ayari and Sarmiento are much better players than the last time I saw them in the stripes.
They can do a job for us, if needed

Webster looked very decent taking on the Dunk role ( still has a ricket in him of course)
Veltman and Welbz - Van Hecke- the same as always. - class.
Milner - much less of a liability in midfield

Weiffer is a unit and looks to play the ball forward and get stuck in (think he was trying a little too hard).

Thought it was a good day out in the summer sun despite the fairly dull game, and half time beer queues. Brighton fans had a good time and sang some songs, QPR were very quiet. Just good to see the boys out on the turf again.

Good post. And now you mention it, that's exactly what I thought about Wieffer. But I liked the look of him.

Don’t think any of our outfield players have played 90 mins since May.

I doubt Dunk will need much of a traditional pre season, he trained with England all summer and would have been ready to go for 90 mins if needed.

He’s just spend the last week in Dubai doing fitness work with Elite Sports Performance who specialise in off season fitness. I don’t see much reason he won’t be ready to go for Everton.

Very fair and true.

The only thing Dunk will need to catch up on is passing patterns, shape in and out of possession and set piece, the whole running around the pitch / terraces twenty plus times are a distant past, and as professional athletes they maintain their fitness during the off-season.

Good post. And now you mention it, that's exactly what I thought about Wieffer. But I liked the look of him.

Yes, the Wieffer criticism is strange.

First game after some time out, first time in a new team, faster pace game, he won tackles, made some passes.

Good physicality, something we lacked last year.

Webster IS class, but wasn’t yesterday, poor passing, too tight a couple of times and covered by Baleba (what a prospect he is even at LB).

Sarmiento looked worse IMO, lots of touches as before but such a heavy first touch, and if we get a half reasonable offer he should go.

Agree with the rest and they were weak, but still a week ahead of us.

Eh? Pedro wasn't on the Japan tour. He only returned to training a few days ago. Hasn't played a minute yet in pre-season.

Pedro started pre season light workout last week is what I meant. I know he wasn’t in Japan.

Looks like Hurzeler's play out from the back modus operandi includes GK looking for lots of straight passes down the middle, rather than the RDZ little triangles. Gets us further up the pitch quicker, provided the pass sticks.
Minteh will be a joy to watch, and Amario a good change up option too.
Baleba is an absolute beast wherever you play him and will only get better.
Agree with previous poster that Ayari and Sarmiento could well be worthwhile squad players even if neither are likely starters.
JPvH, Velts and Welbz continue to add class to proceedings, and it will be interesting to see how Osman gets on.
Kaoru's at about 85% so hope that cranks up nearer 100 by Everton game.
Add the likes of Dunky, Pedro, Enciso, Estupinian etc and we have a deep squad.
Any news on Ferguson and Solly?

Ferguson and Solly have been doing light training for a few weeks. No word on progress. Assume Evan is close to full training return.

Hurzeler has confirmed that Pedro is training and fit and that Dunk is back either tomorrow (day off ? ) or Tuesday. So presumably both in line for game time v Villarreal .

Yes, I was really hoping to see him during pre season. With Cahill on the bench yesterday and getting minutes in Japan, assume he'll be the third keeper this season.
