The six Premier League clubs involved in the European Super League (ESL) are set to be fined over £20m between them.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal wanted to form a breakaway league, a plan that was widely criticised across football and by the UK government.

Further cash penalties and points deductions will be applied should they attempt a similar project again.

It is understood the fines will help fund grassroots and community projects

So, basically they plot to undermine the entire fabric of European football, and get a fine which amounts to around half of one percent of turnover. It's like Guy Fawkes receiving a Community Order (and being politely told that the next time he tries to blow up parliament he might receive a suspended sentence and a fine)!!!

I think we're forgetting these are huge global brands with significant digital footprints, they've already earnt £3.5m in additional clicks!

A substantial points deduction is the only thing that could conceivably prove a sufficient deterrant. 30 points though simply isn't enough, with the amount that a top 6 side is going to amass over a season, just dropping 30 points p;robably wouldn't leave them with the threat of relegation.

That said. like it or not, l can see some sort of breakaway league happening eventually, it isn't a matter of if, but a matter of when. Sooner or later enough ground will be given bny the FA and Premier League to enable it to go ahead. Sad l know.

It’s a bit like when UEFA fined Kosovo or whoever £2k for racist chants.

Bit unfair on our friends from Kosovo, they have a great respect for England and our football team because of the help we gave them in the war.

If the PL had any sense/balls: £50m fine each with a one year transfer embargo. £250m distributed evenly to 'the other 14' and the remaining £50m into grassroots football. Permanent exclusion from the PL for any further attempts.

Yes there is a rule - they can't just go off and joina new competition.

Pretty sure they had all signed contracts, with JP Morgan wasn't it?
I suspect there is a much bigger penalty coming from breach of contract with them, than anything the EPL will throw at them.

Absolutely pathetic punishment.

Personally I wouldn't have gone for points deduction - we know from experience that the actions of Club Directors should not influence directly the league table, but a fine of a minimum of £30 million each - all to grass roots causes - would have been seen as more realistic - this is not even a slap on the wrists.

When you look at what happened to poor old Wigan. Bought by a corrupt owner who put them in administration immediately.

They get docked points.
Condemned to relegation.
Arguably no one within the club at fault.

Punishments for big clubs by footballing authorities will be entirely meaningless to the point that you may as well ask why they even bother.

The size of the figure that has been agreed with the rebel six clubs is smaller than some rivals had hoped for, but the majority of the league is understood to believe that the gesture is acceptable

I would like to think we were not one of them. It would be truly embarrassing if we were.

It should have been at least a one year ban from European competitions, although I assume that the PL don't have the legal right to do this. If you going for a fine, it needs to be something substantial but a 9 point deduction would have been a good start.
