What a wanker! Yesterday was the furthest north I've been and I didn't encounter ONE pleasant northerner. Obviously I'm not suggesting everyone north of Coventry is the same but nevertheless I experienced quite a bit of bitterness just for being southern, or at least I think that's why.

That's a shame, Hiney, Buzzer, Richie Morris, Uncle Buck, Mendoza and many others were drinking in Wetherspoons after the match and the Leeds folk were very hospitable, it was the same on the bus into town, and also before the match in the pub.

I've lived up north for 28 years, and have found the people here to be welcoming, friendly, funny (taught in Liverpool for 14 years), and the women bang like the privy door when the plague is in town.

Sounds that you had a bad experience, there are tossers everywhere, including Brighton, but don't write off half the country from one bad experience.

I travel to Leeds once a month on business, and usually spend the evening in the town pubs. Have to say never had any problems, and despite my southern accent, total strangers are always friendly towards me.
I was there one night recently when they were playing Bradford though. I left my customer and walked back to my hotel as the Leeds fans were walking in the opposite direction (back from the match). Being a non fighting sort of bloke, I was keeping my head down and hoping to f*** I wasn't asked a question 'cos I'm not sure they would have liked my accent!
Other than match days though, I don't think Leeds is a bad place.

I would agree with El Pres, I have always found the North to be pretty friendly and welcoming...I have often been treated with curiousity as much as anything else, the locals usually want to know why a Suvverner would venture that far...though I might add that my only real grief (being punched randomly) was in Huddersfield...so maybe Northerners are just more in touch with their animal insticts than we are.

Well, you must have been in same wetherspoons as me.

I travled up with Hiney:love:

Also have found the North to be pretty friendly and welcoming. But only when you have explained you are not a cockney. Who they seem to have a real dislike to.
And before anyone posts, some of my best friends are cockneys!

Worth following up on what ATFC has told you. If you make sure a report is filed with the Leeds police, then it corroborates ATFC's lads report too. Otherwise the twat could perhaps get some mileage from his 'self-defence' stuff. A call to their cops, make a telephone report and description, and he's a stranger-twatting case-losing mug (so long as it's the same bloke, which sounds very likely).
Also get the ob to report his name to LUFC, and if he's a season ticket holder or ticket buyer, he'll lose more than just a day in court.

Supposedly he's looking at a 5yr banning order, according to what my mate was told by the police last night. They also said it could carry a pretty hefty custodial sentence, but I doubt it will result in that.

Just a thought, but were you wearing the STRIPES stripes?

Not that it excuses it in any way, but maybe the bloke was none too bright and thought you were wearing a Huddersfield top? As I say, no excuse anyway.

Or maybe - could happen - he took serious umbrage at the 'Istanbul' stuff?

But more likely just the token town psycho tho eh?

We could not go yesterday, due to prior arrangements, but we did have a problem with a Leeds (so called) supporter at the match last season, it was after the game and in the car park opposite the Billy Bremner statue, this idiot was just a thug who was looking for trouble, we never wear colours at the away games any more, main reason is we can normally get into the local pubs then.

I was wearing the away shirt, don't think there was an issue of mistaken identity in my case. Also, he threatened my mate (who was wearing no colours but was overheard to say he follows Chelsea), and the Leeds fans we were chatting to (who looked pretty hard) who told him to back away from us. So I think town psycho is on the money.

Yup, certainly sounds like it.

I thought the days had gone where you get thumped for wearing a football shirt but obviously not.

You could tell that the leeds fans just to the left of us were kids. I didn't experience any problems- but leeds is a shithole, with it's crappy roads and general scum which live there

High up on the South Downs.
Leeds have their idiots like most clubs. Have found most of their fans are fine and I've visited Elland Rd many times.
Don't understand the anti-northern sentiments. All my nastiest times following the Albion have involved London clubs and Cardiff.

Depends on what injuries you sustained. If you had simply a nosebleed as a result, the chances are any prosecution would be for common assault, which has a maximum sentence of 6 months anyway.

The sentencing then takes into account somebody's previous, whether they pleaded guilty, whether they offered mitigating circumstances, whether they expressed any kind of remorse, and how nice, smart and respectable the defendant looks when sober and seated in his new suit in front of the elderly ladies on the magistrates' bench.

So all in all, I'd hazard a guess you'd be looking at a small fine (to be paid in pitiful monthly installments after he pleads poverty), perhaps a few hours unpaid work in the community, and if you're lucky, twenty five quid from the criminal injuries compensation board.

I hope I don't sound too cynical towards our justice system
