What about the pub at the Devils Dyke? I haven't been there for a couple of years, but I think the food there is quite good. There is a lovely grassy area outside where kids can play to their hearts' content. Take a kite.

The Devils Dyke Inn. The only problem we've had is you can't book and it gets really busy. Get their early if you're going to eat. My kids love it up there, especially the ruined 'castle' that they can play on.

Brighton is crap for kids play areas. I was in Torquay last year and 25% of pubs down there have a kids play area. Its the brewery's
who missing out on the money.

The Bull at Shermanbury (Henfield) - our sons eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw the playground! Hand made pizzas in the garden on a sunny day in sight of the kids was perfect! (sorry I just re-read your East Sussex critera - this is West Sussex but worth a drive just for the kids to see the great play area)

10 very good links for child friendly pubs in East Sussex. One of NSC's more useful threads.

Indeed - we had this very dilema when back in Sussex with friends a few weeks ago. In the end we went to a regular restaurant.

What it also shows me that, despite living in Sussex for most of my life, I know very little of it outside the suburban coastal strip that stretches from Worthing to Brighton - I've never heard of most of these places!

Bat and Ball near the Level has a wonderful play area at the back of the pub. It's even fenced off from the road for complete safety.

Green Man at Ringmer is supposed to be very good

Roebuck at Laughton is excellent

Trevor inn at Glynde is another good one

Kings head at north Chailey is excellent

Anchor inn, Ringmer worth a punt

I can vouch for all the above except the green man but heard it is excellent
