[Technology] PS4 gaming headsets

Evening all.

My daughter is of the age where she is getting into group chats and online gaming.

Specifically Roblox and Fortnite.

But I'm having trouble getting her headset/microphone to work and I think I might be a luddite when it comes to this stuff.

I bought her a PS4 compatible headset from that river based website but it doesn't work.

She's on a PS4, one friend is on a Nintendo Switch, another is on a PS4 and 2 on Xbox.

She can hear through the headphones when plugged in to the usbon the ps4 but no microphone.

The headphones I bought have a usb connector and a 3.5mm jack on the end of the lead, plus an adaptor for other things I presume....

But the PS4 doesn't have a 3.5mm jack on the console.

I've tried plugging the usb and 3.5mm jack just into the TV but obviously that isn't connected to the console.

I've found the 3.5mm jack hole on the controller but there isn't a usb port on the controller to make it all light up and work properly.

Am I being a div or is there a way to get this set up properly that I'm missing? It's beginning to really piss me off!

I'm pretty sure you plug headsets for the PS4 into the controller.

I'll try again tomorrow and see if the mic works but that doesn't explain how you get them to light up without the usb port to power them. They have a single lead for the length of the cable until about 6" from the end where it splits into the different connectors.....

She'll have to have her arms resting on the console for them to work properly using the consoles usb port.

And we all know sitting that close makes your eyes square....

No idea why the headset you have bought has both a 3.5mm jack and a USB connector but it shouldn't need both connections to enable the headset and mic.

Have you checked this...

How do I turn Fortnite crossplay On or Off from my console?

1. Go to the Menu by pressing Start and scrolling down to the gear icon.
2. Click on Settings.
3. In Settings, go to the Account And Privacy tab.
4. Scroll down to Gameplay Privacy to find Allow Cross Platform Play.
5. Set to Yes to turn crossplay on or No to turn it off.

No idea why the headset you have bought has both a 3.5mm jack and a USB connector but it shouldn't need both connections to enable the headset and mic.

I think the usb bit is to power them so they light up. Pretty sure it's just for show when video streaming as well.

The mic is the important bit so she can join in with the conversation rather than having her phone on WhatsApp video call with just one person when there's 4 or 5 of them


Shes tucked up in bed now so I'll get her to try with just the mic tomorrow and tell her to forget about the light up bits.

I’m PS5 these days and have been for a while but from memory, your options are, 3.5mm Jack in the controller or USB in the console, same via the monitor is also an option depending on the monitors outputs and what you’re sending to the monitor (optical fibre is an option too on PS4 but not on this headset) but please forgive me, don’t take this the wrong way, no desire to be unnecessarily mean but that is a very, VERY cheap headset, which is fantastic if your daughter is happy and meets her needs for such a cheap price but I am fairly confident that the USB is for power and the RGB LED Lights only. So it’s the 3.5mm only that is capable of an audio connection, which should make it very simple and easy. I suspect that what you’ve yet to do is adjust the settings in the PS4 sound/audio menu to enable headset/microphone via your new headset. Keep clicking around, you’ll find it. Good luck.

No worries. I've come to the same conclusion. I just never saw the 3.5mm jack on the controller! I've been looking all over and around the console for a little hole and thought I was going mad

I know it's cheap.

But she's 9 years old.

And I was reticent in spending that much truth be told.......

It's a hand me down console from my brother in law who no longer uses it.

And I'm also keeping a very close eye on her contacts and what she's up to

A few in her year now have mobile phones and have a school/class WhatsApp group etc so I'm dipping our toes into online socialising under strict conditions and rules.

I'm dreading her turning into a teenager and wanting to go out with her friends unsupervised

Terrifying chap! I don’t envy you. My niece is just a little older and she’s up all hours on various electrical devices chatting with god knows who, of all ages and influences. Very difficult to strike the balance between allowing them their freedoms etc and protecting them in this day and age without them growing up too fast. Especially when ‘everyone else does!’ etc. Best of luck. Come back and let me know if you need more help with the settings. I strongly suggest that’s your issue. My set up is EXTREMELY complex with external speakers, headset, amp, equaliser and switcher between multiple channels/inputs/outputs, Bluetooth, USB-C, mobile & laptop for work and the PS5 so I fully appreciate what a headache it can be. My limitation is I’m trying to help with my memory of the PS4 only, which is slightly different to PS5.
