What a dumb thread. The op probably says we are going to win every tournament we turn up to. If so, he's been wrong apart from one occassion. So far, we have only achieved what most people probably expected us to, ie get out of the group. Yes there are some that may have said we wouldn't get out but that was more probably down to lowering their own expectation to avoid the disappointment they recall from recent campaign.

Back to the OP, yes we have a chance of winning, just look at Denmark and Greece, but so far, we are only in the quarter finals.

The England performance has got to be considered along with RH's, AND, I think he has done exceptionally well in such a short time.

It does say something about Liverpool and their fans LOL

I love the merest mention of plastic JCL support, in any setting, and the same argument gets spouted back, which has no relevance to the question.

'oh I was there in 1914 in the trenches, playing Germany, I'm not plastic. But I have spent the last month slagging off England, Roy, and saying we would lose every game and come home in shame, don't call me plastic though I'm a loyal supporter'

Couldn't be further from the truth, as a rule I take the contrarian approach. (See Spain threads).

No they didn't hence the thread.
Yes there are some that may have said we wouldn't get out but that was more probably down to lowering their own expectation to avoid the disappointment they recall from recent campaign.
History rewrite, just look at the ONLY 2 threads.

Back to the OP, yes we have a chance of winning, just look at Denmark and Greece, but so far, we are only in the quarter finals.
A feat so few people expected those of us that did, deserve to have a laugh, in the face of all the haters.

I think you are being OTT. I don't recall any haters, and if there are so many of them, it should be relatively easy to list them shirley?

I think Steve Gerrard summed it up well, job done, without playing particularly well.

England are 6th in the FIFA rankings. Therefore we should be progressing from the group phase. We drew against France (14th) and beat Sweden (17th) and Ukraine (52nd). Seven points is a good haul, but in line with what the statistics would suggest is appropriate.

Our path to the final is probably against Italy (12th) who are beatable, and then Germany (3rd) and Spain (1st).

I don't feel much for England and squeezing past Ukraine in a mostly uninteresting game that they dominated made me feel disgruntled that we have a side so devoid of magic. It irks me to hear of our squad being a work in progress when all we'll really be on the end of when it's complete is a very defensively organised and set-piece-happy side. The real work in progress is in getting a footballing world together in which everyone knows how to kill a ball dead when it comes to them and have the intelligence to dart and move when their teammate needs them. Expressive, self-confident and co-operative. We'll never be Spain, but we should be able to match Ukraine at least, and never be inspired by ITV commentary telling us to whack it forwards when we have a comfortable 12-ball move in the midfield area.
I won't change my tune if we happen to battle through another round. Heroism is all well and good, but inspiration is what charges us forward and may change us.

Sorry...yes I want England to win, glad RH got the job rather than HR....Rooney's goal...my cat could've scored that. Thought Terry and Lescott played well...but little interest really...my love is Albion and all things Albion, so England are in the bracket of 'Well hope you do well',we need to win it after only having one major win in our history....more excited about our coming season.

Oh come on lighten up El Pres.
I'm just pulling the chain of ALL the people on here, down on England.

Had you posted those stats in May you would have been laughed out of town, We both know that.

I'm just having a little fun at the expense of all the people NOW dusting their car flags off.

I thought we'd get 3 draws and go out, though at the same time I thought we had a better chance of doing something special (that is still a tiny chance) than in previous tournaments, now we've accepted we're not actually very good at football.
Glad we won a couple of games and topped group, just hoping that the players continue to recognise that we're not very good at football and we'll have some chance instead of no chance.

Post 23 on the second thread, Still believe Carrol will be good for us. We comes on late gives tired defenders something to think about and can clear the ball when defending corners.

I was confident we would get out of the group stages, but didn't think we would finish at the top so they've out done my expectations there.. Still, I don't have expectations past Italy. If we win then great, but if they loose I wouldn't be too surprised.

Nope, still not excited by England.
Roughly, this. Of course I want us to do well, but we've not been very good yet. We did well to get a draw against France, a draw I was happy with, but France were the better side. We rode our luck against a poor Swedish team, and were outplayed in the first half by a side that was missing their one good player.

Yes we deserved to get through the group. Yes, we are one of the top 8 teams in Europe. Is that exciting - no. I'd like to be one of the top 3 teams in Europe, that's not a lot to ask.

When was the last time England played Italy in a proper competition?
What are the head to head between the two teams?

My mum is Italian but she would like to see England do well.
In her words "It abouta tima" lol

I didn't have any expectations of this England team before the tournament. So anything they achieve above getting out of the groups is a bonus. If this makes me a JCL or whatever, then I'm fine with that. There is a strong difference between expectation and support, though.

Well we're doing much better than I thought we would. 7 points and the two wins have been impressive results for different reasons. I thought we would get two points.

But the refreshing thing this time is the understated, almost humble behaviour of our players. My guess is that Roy Hodgson has told his players not be drawn into answering questions about whether we can win it. I'd expect the team to have the belief that they can do it, but going public on it causes no end of problems.
