Apparently he was using racist slurs too. Although the sentence does seem a bit OTT. Maybe he has previous.
He has. It’s in the article.

McCarthy admitted violent disorder at a previous hearing. He has convictions for violence, weapons offences and public order.

There’s ALWAYS more to it, than the snowflakes‘ wimpering suggests.

Take this fine patriot, whose good mate - a decent family bloke - has been jailed for 34 months, just for attending a protest. We are invited to contribute to a crowdfund for his family.

Only it turns out he’s actually pleaded guilty to violent disorder, after being filmed leading the attack on the police, including the launching of missiles at mounted police.

It also turns out that kind hearted Jake, is the Burnley fan, whose last bit of fund-raising was responsible for the Burnley ‘white lives matter’ banner flown over the Etihad.

Blimey, I'd never seen this among all the recent posts.

I do love the 'innocent until proven guilty' ethos.

Why give people who call you out a thumbs up, then keep on with the trope that has been called out?

I can see this even though I have the relevant person on ignore.

It seems even if you ignore idiots, they can still re-appear like a turd that won't flush.
