I didn't agree with that earlier.

But I think I was wrong.
It's a fine line. You don't want to give the EDL what they want, which is all out war. A lot of people were worried that battles on the streets would play into their hands.

But it turns out their troops consisted of 'Two Teeth Tracy', 'Bin Fire Brenda' and lads that cry in court and suddenly develop 'mental health'.

Ok I admit it, I've been proven wrong in my thinking on this occassion. I was obviously too fixated on the potential for the rapid escalation of any violence rather than the deterrent and solidarity aspect. I guess I have been educated this evening. The pictures have indeed been very heartwarming after a horrendous week of feeling ashamed at how these thugs have behaved with the countries flag wrapped around their shoulders.
Many of us have learned something today. I was really down, earlier. This turnaround has been fantastic.

Well said. I too have been educated. I didn't follow my conviction and got it in my head that there would be lots of anti's going for a tear up which I didn't want to be associated with.

I underestimated my countrymen and those I share my incredible city with.

Evil flourishes when good men do nothing. Tonight I did nothing. Next time it will be different.

For those that disagreed with counter protest - you've just witnessed history in action. Moseley was stopped pre-war at Cable Street and again in the 50s in Notting Hill, the NF by Rock Against Racism and the ANL, the BNP by the ANL and the actual EDL was stopped in Walthamstow a decade ago. You cannot stop fascism with police violence and politicians using racist language (even Labour tries), you protect our communities - White, Black, Asian, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Atheist, Refugees, Gays, Transgender, Immigrant, Trade Union etc by uniting and standing up to them. Tonight did more to stop this brutal assault on the most vulnerable than days of police swinging batons. I knew you wouldn't let me down before I returned from my holiday.
Brilliantly put. I've actually wiped away a tear or two tonight. I mentioned Cable Street in a Whatsapp chat and a friend sent me this:

Someone gave me an analogy of a large tree where it was being overcrowded with more birds (which I took as them meaning immigrants). I replied it’s more like a large tree which is dominated by a small number of predatory birds which forces the rest to fight each other over for a perch on a crowded branch.
I can't be bothered to read through this thread as there's still people that think there's a point to the riots beyond racism, as Farage, toffs and billionaires laugh at the people venting their rage at decades of neglect on the most vulnerable not those that gained the most from it all. So here's a picture of my lovely neighbours in Walthamstow waiting for the Fascists this evening.

Silly old bat
So are there no towns being smashed up for the first time tonight? What was all that 100 planned bollox
This list was sent out on social media listing immigration centres and human rights lawyers. My granddaughter is at University of Kent in Canterbury, where the immigration centre is on campus.
They were warned to evacuate this morning so she got on a train home. Kent police had it covered.

Unprovoked threats in Wetherspoons. Nothing abnormal.
I has three there in one night. As you probably recall.

Wedged between a bookies and a one arm bandit slot emporium, the Leading Light is Faversham's go-to for its self-defined underclass.

For sixty bob (FavSpoons only takes money from before we 'joined' the common market) you can enjoy a pint of wifebeater, with a pickled egg and bag of peanuts which, if you're lucky, when removed from the poster backing will reveal a bit of Caroline Munro's left tit.

Was there actually anything to counter though? Saw a report about 10 anti-immigration protesters in Soton. But you’ll find more than that protesting about the licence fee in Westminster Square on any one day, so it really is/was desperate stuff! Because there were lots of rumours about widespread and massive disorder across the land tonight. But as someone said earlier, the hype is always greater than the event. So was it a load of hot air to begin with? Maybe. Regardless I’m still of the opinion, the number of people prepared to actually participate in a riot on behalf of the far right as a proportion of our population is actually tiny. Boasted by lots of gormless video types who stand around filming and adding their hot air. Obviously. But actual bonafide fascists wanting a fight compared to normal decent law abiding persons? Nah, not even close. With all the media hyperbole, 24/7 news etc it’s always hard to determine what’s actually happening though.
