The first racist banged up got 2 months. TWO MONTHS! Yeah, that's going to act as a deterrent. The police and Starmer must be doing their nuts at the weak judiciary.

(It's all over the media but I'm not giving him publicity by linking here. It's simple to find)
He'll probably spend about 3 weeks inside (40% of the sentence, minus the time spent on remand).

Out in a month

Still enough to screw your job up ( if you work )

Think it will ramp down now. The normal protestors aren't going to risk getting banged up . Even just being there could get you caught in crossfire.

You would think the gov etc has seen the strength of feeling though + the huge numbers . Maybe things will be different in time. Nothing ever gets fixed in a day

The true protestors need to find a way to speak up without the mindless thugs , things then can move forward

I was thinking about what type of person would make the ideal PM at a time like this. A checklist might include:

- Thoughtful, calm manner;
- Reasonably centrist (not likely to exacerbate political divisions; capable of bringing the nation together);
- Strong supporter of law and order;
- Strong experience of bringing communities together;
- Personal knowledge of the concerns of religious minorities....

And then you might add: someone who has led the CPS, especially if that leadership was at a time when similar rioting occurred in the UK.

It's often been said that the UK was particularly unlucky to have Boris Johnson as PM during Covid.....he just wasn't the right sort of person (for many reasons!!) to lead us through those challenges. Maybe now we are lucky to have exactly the right sort of leader to lead us through the current challenges....?
Corbyn, Bob Crow etc were against freedom of movement and other key aspects of the EU. Claiming it led to a race to the bottom in wages.
That turned out well.
Great work Grandpa 😠

Time will tell on Southport and Gillingham won’t it, my guess is the establishment and media will coalesce around mental illness, but as I have referenced I don’t trust them to be truthful with motives. Intuitively speaking, the attack on the soldier in Gillingham does not feel like the act of a random violence by a loon but a targeted attack. Similarly Southport, an act of violence so awful that it’s effect would cause the maximum fallout with the public, as it has done. In both cases the perpetrators travelled to the places they committed their acts of violence, that does not indicate mental psychosis, quite the opposite.

Mental illness is now a convenient mechanism for distraction, the case in Nottingham of the individual stabbing and running his victims over did nothing to resolve that position, if anything it’s exacerbated the levels of distrust. That individual should be in prison. Similarly Huw used it as a means to explain his degeneracy, the public can see through it he deception.

Let’s be clear the issue of immigration is complicated, and there are aspects of it which are positive and negative. Unfortunately we do not have politicians that are honest enough to accept there are negatives. For the establishment the narrative is that there are only unbridled positives. This is not reconciling with the lived experience of the public, and politicians and institutions that ignore that position are responsible for building the up pressure in those areas which are most pent up about how factors connected to “immigration” is affecting their lives.

For example, the housing of illegal in migrants in hotels is madness, and toxic, one near me had protests when announced, not just about the illegals, but about all the staff being laid off as the home office supply contractors. No one cared about them, and they were working class of all hues.

Starmer has lumped anyone and everyone that has concerns about immigration into the far right bucket, that’s simply not true.
I agree that it's nuts to have all these people in hotels, so does the Labour Party, its in their manifesto to get on top if the asylum backlog.
Personally, I think the Tories, were quite happy to have the issue, for a couple of reasons. This is just my thinking, I have no concrete proof of this, so don't go and set fire to a Tory over it.

About 20% of murders currently, are committed by someone having a severe mental episode, most often it's a family member or other carer that gets killed, but when it is random people, it looks like a terror attack. Its another symptoms of austerity, lack of care. Please don't jump to the wrong conclusions.

Oh really? I thought that they'd probably check to see if the arrested person drove a Tesla, read a broadsheet and shopped at Waitrose and, if they did, let them off with a pat on the head and a special handshake.
Class and race has had a factor in justice.
We can hope that this wife of a Tory gets her correct punishment. The evidence looks clear so they would be hard not to giver her a longer sentence here, but I lived long enough to see lighter sentences for the privileged and I'm not the only one to notice that or talk about it.

Earlier in this thread there were some comments along the lines of "How can I help?". As it happens, there's a Brighton-based charity that's encouraging people to send them handwritten messages of support for asylum-seekers.....

There are so many more people who want to spread a message of welcome and solidarity to asylum seekers in the UK than spread hate, a charity boss has said, amid an “incredible response” to a campaign to counter violence seen across the country.

Conversation Over Borders, a national charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers, is calling for people to send in welcoming notes which will be delivered to asylum seekers staying at initial hotel accommodation, including those targeted in “far-right violence”. Chief executive Colette Batten-Turner said since putting the call out the charity received 150 messages by the next day, adding: “We are getting more and more messages come in by the second.”

“People are really rallying around it,” she said. “It’s incredible to see it, I think it’s so important the voices we are hearing, most are the voices of far-right extremism, that it’s actually really not representative of most people in the UK.”

She added: “My message to anyone living in initial accommodation hotels and newly arrived to the UK or feel affected, is… there are so many more people who want to spread a message of welcome and solidarity and compassion, and who will welcome those people to the UK, and feel the UK is a better place because they’re here.
Sharing positive messages to asylum seekers began as part of the charity’s digital inclusion project where a note from the donor would accompany technology such as a laptop to the newly arrived asylum seeker to create a “personal connection”.

“It’s really touched people and really helped,” Ms Batten-Turner said, as the initiative aims to counter a narrative of exclusion and racism, and think about how people who have just arrived are “just human beings like everyone else”. The charity hopes to start sending out the handwritten notes at the end of the week.

You can submit a personal note using the form here: https://www.conversationoverborders.org/campaigns

You can also send a handwritten note to their office in Queens Road. It's just along from where the "protest" and counter-protest is due to take place this evening :(

Were these ‘normal’ and ‘true’ protestors on the streets because they thought a Muslim asylum seeker had murdered 3 innocent young girls?

So many problems are down the Conservatives underfunding government departments. Be it policing, Immigrations, local authorities, prison service.

If/when they do govern again, I hope they learn this lesson.

Speakers corner is a free speech area, it's the one place in the country where you can say what you like about Islam and not be arrested by the police in public. Muslims often outnumber Christians in that area. There have been multiple attacks and even murder attempts by Islamists at the park. The debate is often heated and it's often shouting match but by and large most don't resort to violence.
As you say, most people don’t resort to violence but that video demonstrates how inflammatory and insulting behaviour could. (There has only been one attempted murder afaia (by a Muslim against a Muslim-> Christian convert btw. ) Posting such video content onto an NSC thread where posters are largely condemning the racist riots is both irrelevant and deliberately pushing an anti-islamophobic agenda. Clearly intolerance and a lack of respect for the others religion is rife at Speakers corner but irl, it is a situation closely monitored and managed by the police.

It is not that ‘island of unfettered free speech’ at Speakers Corner that is responsible for the widespread mobilisation of riotous behaviour through online incitement:

Musk and owners of other social media platforms should be made criminally liable

I said days ago on this thread that Elon Musk opening up Twitter to extremist account users (including Trump, Tate and Robinson) is one of the major reasons why the far right have been able to use social media particularly X, to spread their hatred and influence. It is the fox in charge of the hen house to allow global social platform owners to moderate their own toxic content according to their political views.

Elon Musk and other social media platform owners should be made individually and corporately, criminally liable for the harmful content of their sites.

In environmental law, Corporate liability and individual liability has for years operated on the principle the ’the Polluter Pays’. If the captain of an oil tanker, drunk at the tiller, crashes and causes an enormous oil leak he will be individually liable for criminal negligence and his company will also be corporately liable for the clean up.

Elon Musk is one of the biggest ’Polluters’ of the internet through tolerating harmful and extremist content on social media that pollutes the minds of people accessing the site - he needs to ‘Pay’ both with corporate fines and with criminal sanctions against him personally.

He also needs to really really shut the fcuk up about politics and interfering in the British government’s handling of the riots - he’s a multi-billionaire demagogue with a hard right ideology who has too much power and no democratic accountability.

And that’s kind of my point. There has been this feeling in the UK for a long time. But people were scared of being called RACIST. And now suddenly they aren’t.
I have no idea if they are happy to be called racist, or if this is new. If they are, it won't help them.

Old Das Reich was quite relaxed about being called racist.

My point, if I have a point, is that I don't believe for a second that hundreds (or thousands) of white blokes have suddenly decided to be racist, or suddenly decided to be proud of it.

I suspect most of them still don't think they are racist. Most of them seem to be out there just to have a laugh.

I remember the riots of 81. I lived in Edgware. There was an awful lot of copycat wankpuffinry. I remember seeing a group of 4 white lads who looked like they were on their way to a Haircut 100 gig, throwing a bin through a shop window and running off. I raised an eyebrow.

I can't remember what the 'riots' of 81 were about. The media reported the end of civilization as we know it. It wasn't. And neither is this.

Seems perfectly sensible to me. They knew who the people were, they had officers present, there’s been an arrest and there will be more based on the evidence gathered. This was a protest within a known local community.

In contrast to the EDL where they don’t know who’s going to be there until the train pulls in, and don’t know the numbers.

Sensible use of resource and excellent policing. Well done that man.

It is amazing that all these people who don't understand the difference between refugee, asylum seekers, immigrants and illegal immigrants are now suddenly experts in the nuance of best practice police operations.

I heard Farage banging on about two tier policing so I assume this is where they are parroting this nonsense from.
