Protests in London

NSC seems to have a serious problem with generalising. "The left" is a broad spectrum.

While "the left" can include idealistic students, anarchist squatters and the rogue kind of scum bag that advocates violence or vandalises war memorials - greater in number are the academics or regular people who simply believe in a fairer society, where the most vulnerable are looked after and public services are kept as vital components of the wellbeing of all people.

Generalising and tarring "the left" with the same brush is as useful as claiming "the right" are all greedy, heartless or chauvinist. If society is to progress it is important that we have intelligent discussions about the disagreements between the left and right, rather than mindlessly picking teams and refusing to listen to the other side.

Of course this protest today does not represent the typical "leftie" - you can see from the pictures that it largely consists of students who presumably formed a flash mob through social media - however we should not let the actions of one or two idiots detract from the serious issues that affect us all. If you consider life from an U25's point of view, with astronomical tuition fees and no realistic chance of ever owning their own home, coupled with the thought of a privatised NHS, it is unsurprising that they are the first to hit the streets.

Students have been protesting for decades. Nothing new. Whoever did the graffiti needs to be dealt with by the courts, as many have been in the past. But also people have the right to be frustrated ehen they see this and comment on it.

As a self-proclaimed leftie, deeply hacked off with the election result, I agree that it's p**s poor when people don't accept decisions which are the result of legitimate democratic processes, in which they themselves had the chance to participate. I felt the same about the Countryside Alliance lot who went around smashing things up when they didn't get their way on fox hunting

I was thinking the same, I was randomly in Westminster that day and it was one odd the oddest thing I have seen in London. Lots of Barber Jackets drinking in the pubs whilst their "hands" were kicking off further down.

Expect a bit more this without me taking a political slant. It's always the same with a Conservative Government - acts as a pressure valve - and you always get the odd idiot with a spray can who ruins it by spraying grafitti in completely the wrong place.

Protests which sometimes get a bit nasty are part and parcel of a capital city and have been for hundreds and hundreds of years and sometimes it's the Landed Gentry.

Does make living in London a bit more interesting.

Not particularly but I suppose it gives the Tory voters something to feel righteous about. The memorials they visit once a year and pretend to care while the Tory party tears apart everything the war was ACTUALLY fought for.

Vandalising war memorials? No, not good. Destroying everything these people fought for ? MUCH WORSE.

FFS man, stop with the confused bullshit. Just condem the behaviour of the scumbags without the veiled anti Tory excuses for their actions as if it's some kind of reasoned excuse. There isn't an excuse no matter how hard you look and your little dig at voters who disagree with your politics to try and make the actions of scumbags ( Tory voters something to feel righteous etc) a little less embarrassing.....really doesn't work!

Whilst defacing the war memorial was disgusting, and I think this protest was uncalled for. IMO it won't be long until there are much bigger protests. Whilst the Tories were voted in I feel that Labour lost a lot of votes because of the media and the Scottish voting SNP. Plus too many people have voted Tory because they only care about themselves. Now there is no way I will be able to get my own house until my late 20s at the earliest plus there will be little chance of me and a majority of people my age going to uni because of the cost, so whilst this protest was uncalled for I do think the UK electorate got it wrong and when the NHS becomes privatised all the people who aren't rich but voted Tory can only hope they don't need it

This is probably just the beginning, the inevitable civil unrest which will be exacerbated by the impending Tory cuts.

Both the left and right are feeling an utter failure of democracy right now. 7.5m UKIP, Green and Lib Dem voters all have every right to feel disgruntled - the 9 million Labour voters won't feel much better.

We have an interesting few years ahead of us.

Do you think the vandalism of a war memorial is in any way acceptable at the present time by people who are just pixxed off by the election result?

This and people lap up the establishment press feeding out the brain washing .

Incredible we have another 5 years of deepening cuts . How they got voted in is a shock . It must be purely down to the press protecting them and people believing what they read . Can only think the Scottish press is a bit more truthful and they've voted anti austerity .

Good on the protests . Know more than your average joe !

Get a bar of soap! :wanker:

the type of person who does this is the typical pseudo-socialist who thinks they are being "right on" by their
actions. That goes for most of the protestors. If any of them had had to endure what some people have in this
country (and I mean properly endure) then protesting in this f****** childish way would not be their way.

F*****g tools the lot of them.

Unfortunately mate, this is exactly the excuse these scumbags believe is justified in that sort of behaviour! .....pathetic......' I don't like the government' therefore I have cante blanche to act like a ****. Don't like it, feel free to leave, but you know you won't, will you?
