It's not just consumer items that need oil to operate - Everything from our food production, water supply, electricity and virtually every aspect of modern living needs oil to function somewhere along the line.

We can't just "boycott" oil, society can't function without it. Oil companies rule the world for this reason.

Presumably you've never tried to actually function without it. That's because you want to rage against them but you don't actually want to move from your comfort zone to reject such a society.

It's not a "product" - Apple and Toyota make products. Oil companies just extract a finite natural resource that should by right belong to all of us...

Crude oil/petroleum is used to make thousands of products.

There is nothing that is higher in demand in this world - this is why oil companies rule this world, have the power to corrupt world politics, cause and aggravate global conflicts to get even more oil, destroying the environment in the process, and ripping off every single person on this planet by creating an illusion of scarcity to maximise profits and get even more filthy, stinking rich.

They pay for the drilling rights, so it does go to all of us in theory. A government with vast natural reserves has the right to say no, but as it turns out, they apparently need the money as much as every one of us needs the petrol. The oil companies are not naturally evil. They just prosper in a world where humans are driven by greed. It's too easy to blame the most obvious villain.

And the stuff that comes out of the ground is far different to the stuff that goes into cars. There is no objective way of differentiating between whether an iPhone, a car or a litre of unleaded petrol are "products". I'd suggest it's a lot harder to locate, drill and transport millions of gallons of oil through intercontinental pipes than it is to pay children to assemble a bunch of ready-made components like Apple do.

Petrol companies have done a very good job of stalling the development of cars that use alternative methods of propulsion over the years. This is a great example of their manipulation of patents and government policy.

We need oil and as things stand the present arrangement appears to be the best there is. If you have a better (and practical) idea I suggest you start a campaign to have things changed.

Good post. Oil companies are not completely evil as some would have us believe. And if your "hate" of oil companies is linked to the cost of petrol, just remember that in the UK we're paying 60% tax and duty on fuel. Without it petrol would be less than 60p, a figure that doesn't sound altogether unreasonable when you consider the cost of exploration, drilling, refining, transportation, etc., etc.
