At the risk of angering anyone by posting a political thread .....

There is a protest at Greenleas Park Car Park, Sunday 16th October @ 16:30. I'd like to encourage any Hangleton or Portslade peeps on here to come along and demonstrate that we don't want Benfield Valley built on.

Currently it's used by hundreds of dogs walkers, numerous hikers, kids out on bikes including the fantastic jumps they've spent some years building, Footgolf and as a gateway link to the South Downs. Green space like this should be protected not developed.

NIMBY alert!
Happy to be called that but it's slightly different territory to a muddy old field right next to two sprawling Uni campuses.

I’ll probably be over with the dog. I’m a regular through the valley and up to Benfield Nature Reserve. It would a great shame to loose any of this green corridor that links the Downs from the Old Shoreham Road.

Bollocks is it :lolol: To the residents of Falmer the exact same issues were at stake. You can't even face up to being a monumental hypocrite.

Oh the boomer generation of this country is just a delight isn't it?

Such a shame they binned off that 9 hole golf course there. I was a fairly dedicated hacker back then, and in the spring/summer months would routinely drive to work with the clubs in the boot, so as to indulge in a sneaky 9 holes on the way home, followed by a pint in the Hangleton Manor. I loved that.

38 was my best ever score round that course when it was a 9-er. And it was the ONLY time I ever broke 40.

You could always sneak 9 holes of Foot Golf and then the Manor instead ;)

Always underwhelmed by the first hole but from memory it got better by hole.

Please provide the details of the activities and how many participated in them on the old muddy field. Then maybe we can have a grown up conversation about the differences. Oh, way out on the 'Boomer' bit.

Is that footgolf course on what is left of the original West Hove Golf Club?
It was slightly before my time of living in that area but West Hove was moved to where it is now to make way for the Sainsburys store. Half of the remaining space was turned into Benfield Valley Golf Course - 9 holes. Owned by the Boon brothers who have attempted to build on it for years. Instead they now lease it to Foot Golf.

It did. Although it was always a bit of a SLOG down the gravel track, across the bridge over the A27 sliproad, then up the other side to take on the 4th.

The 9th was a lovely hole to finish with. Downhill all the way, bravery was rewarded to avoid the shrubbery down the right.

Agree, remember the slog to the 4th, especially bad if you had a trolley

I liked the elevated 9th and a decent hole to finish on.

Was also good in the winter months with chalk infused soil so rarely waterlogged

Always needed a minute to catch my breath before teeing off on the 4th (yup, I had a trolley).

My PERFECT Saturday used to begin with 9 holes at Benfield with a few mates, before ditching the clubs and mincing along to The Stadium pub along OSR. A few jars there over the pool table, then a slope along to the Goldstone into the North Stand for the game. Straight afterwards a visit to the Hove Park Tavern for a few more, then up to the greyhounds for the evening. Then down to New Church Road to spend the winnings on a curry, and back home for MOTD (which had been taped). Basically an all-day bender.

Ahhh....to be single again.

Those were the days.

My weekends are somewhat different these days, a lottery win is the only way I see personal responsibility diminishing sadly!

30 years ago I used to argue with my Dad about the Brighton bypass. He was hugely pro the road to be bulldozed through the South Downs at whatever environmental cost and cheapest design, I was a conservationist. I said that over time the claims of no infilling development up to the road, would prove to be lies.

Sure enough, more and more countryside and parkland south of the A27 has been concreted over.

if children and grandchildren would just move to the north, none of this would be necessary.

Wherever new housing is proposed, there are plenty of people (often with perfectly reasonable reasons) who will argue that the proposed location is 'the wrong place'. Similarly, most that object to new housing have a home of their own.
The only way house prices will fall to a level that the ordinary first time buyer can afford to buy will be if supply exceeds (or at least is in balance to) demand. But then if you own a home it is in your interest to stop new housing so a lack of supply continues to push up prices and thus increase the value of your own home.
It's a dichotomy that will never be solved, hence governments (and all parties appear to agree on this) are forcing local authorities to build more housing.
Unfortunately this will, of course, always be in 'the wrong place'.
