Of course there are two other scenarios; win replay and win promotion or lose replay and lose out on promotion. They really are not linked in any way. Some will say a good cup run breeds a winning fighting spirit, while others will say the risk of injuries/tiredness make cup games a luxury we can ill afford. Personally, I think the cup has dented our confidence a bit, and had we played stronger sides we'd have had only 2 games instead of 4, and a 3rd round tie to look forward to. Cup games are often a welcome distraction for players as the league pressure starts to build. By resting your big name players, there is even more pressure on them when the next league game comes round....

Leeds also had a far bigger budget than us last season, and could afford to lose players. We are punching above our weight in terms of ability to pay players in this league compared to our league position at present.

Which players did Leeds lose due to their cup run?

If we lived in a world where this choice existed, obviously the choice would be go up. So far Poyet's selection policy in the FA Cup seems to have caused more problems than it has prevented unfortunately.
