I agree with picking Bell, I would have just had a back-up in Shah in case he carries on playing shit.

I'm not surprised at Udal at all. If Giles breaks down you need an experienced spinner in form, and I'm sure 35 wickets at 18 a piece and a summer bowling with Shane Warne at Hampshire will have helped.

I'm not sure about Loudon. It is a bold move, although it is at the expense of another batsmen.

The problem there is the poor Ashes form of Bell - if that continues we will have to change the batting line-up and dynamic of the team - I would have preferred Shah who's had the best season of his life and can come in at 4 if required.

Yeah I can understand those reasons as Udal wont let anyone down.

It just surprised me that they didnt go for someone like Panesar or another youngster because in recent years they have always resisted claims to recall Gough or Caddick and seemed to opt for youth.

Having said that they did go for Bicknell in the South Africa series, so I am probably ruining my original point!

The fact that they've taken Loudon and Udal, and not another batsman, is a massive endorsement of Prior's ability to bat as well as keep wicket.

I can also see the sense in picking both Tremlett and Anderson, get them together on tour and see which one emerges as the first choice back up to the quartet. I suspect it might be Anderson.

But as a rule teams play 2 spinners out there. So if Louden or Udal takes the second spot one of the 4 seamers will lose out (the injured Jones?), meaning that we have 3 seamers not doing much.

I would agree with that although on those pitches in the sub continent I think they will both struggle. For me Tremlett is the one with thenmost promise though Anderson's ability to reverse swing may help him along too.

Exciting times really.

If we play two spinners I think hoggard will probably miss out. Not going to be much swing out there for him.

Maybe, but out in India last time Hoggard and Flintoff opened the bowling.

I think Harmisson might be the one that struggles, simply because he does not tour well. However England may start the tour with 4 seamers and use Vaughan and Bell to assist on the spinning front.

In terms of the no-extra batsman question - I think they're thinking either Collingwood or Prior can be an extra batsman if required. I disagree with the choice of spinners personally - I would go for Panesar above both Loudon & Udal.

One Surrey player in all the squads.

Rikki Clarke has (incredibly) been picked to go to the Academy.

I have never been the biggest fan of Rikki Clarke, but to be fair, he has had a decentish season for Surrey and scored some runs of late, so I guess they think there is something perservering with.

Thank god the days when him, Anthony McGrath and Ian Blackwell made up our 1 day middle order have gone though!

I agree. He was absolutely rubbish in the West Indies last year. Did you see the way he gave those 12 runs away in return for those measley 7 wickets? Absolute shit.

Well done.

Look at his record in South Africa last year. Or look at his record in Aus in 2002/03. He admitts he gets homesick and Pakistan is one of the more uncomfortable tours.

Now off you trott and work on your witty retorts, you are not up to LI's standard yet...

Fair enough. I'll go and do some work instead then.

In fairness Harmison wasn't all that great at home this season either, though I'm sure he does a bit of softening up for the other bowlers.
