Sky Sports News speculating on the squad and think there's a good chance Matt Prior will be included.

Read's batting is a great myth. His average for the last 2 seasons in the Championship is over 50.

I agree - hence the word apparently. I just don't think the selectors can get that dismissal a few years ago against the Windies out of their minds - the slower yorker he tried to duck out the way of!

Read hit a quick 70 for Notts the other, he is no mug with the bat at all as his averages show.

Prior will go in the one day squad although I think Read should still go as the second wicket keeper with Prior as a specialist batsman if he goes at all.

I think this winter tour could put a lot of pressure on Jones as the ball on those pitches could be going all over the place, so Read could force his way back in.

Regarding Prior, his glove work has all the same faults as Jones.

Was that not against New Zealand off the bowling of Chris Cairns? The ball looped out of sightline and he ducked thinking it was a beamer?

The thing i dont understand is jones cant catch - what is the point of a wicketkeeper who gets a high score but drops 3 or 4 catches a game that could wipe off his score?

Read can't catch? Neither can Jones (and he can't stump either). But I'd be surprised if Prior was chosen above either as he's had a miserable time with the bat recently.

Cricinfo give the nod to Prior, frankly I'll be suprised - even though I'm Sussex-mental, Read seems the best choice

from Cicinfo:

England name their squad for the Pakistan leg of their 2005-06 season this morning, and it is not expected to contain any real surprises.

The 11 who played in four of the Ashes Tests are certain to make the trip, which leaves five places up for grabs.

One of those has to be a wicketkeeper, and that appears to be a fight between Chris Read and Matt Prior; the one extra batting place is a straight scrap between Paul Collingwood, Robert Key, Owais Shah and Ed Joyce; two fast bowling reserves are likely, and those will come from Chris Tremlett, James Anderson and Jon Lewis. England also have to decide on a back-up slow bowler, and that will probably be Gareth Batty.

The one-day squad for the tour will also be named today, as will the group picked to join the National Cricket Academy at Loughborough.

Cricinfo's England squad Michael Vaughan (capt), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Gareth Batty, Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Geraint Jones, Simon Jones, Jon Lewis, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Owais Shah, Andrew Strauss, Marcus Trescothick.

I think we must take second wicketkeeper, and I'd like to see Prior but Read could not have done more to earn a recall.

However, the other question mark is second spinner, and I agree with Bob Willis that Shaun Udal is the man. However, I think it unlikely they will choose 2 ex-test players in the same squad as it will be seen by some as a regressive step.

I'd take Prior on the basis that he's a more positive batsman that Read and therefore a better straight replacement for Jones.

I'd also take Shah, Udal, Anderson and Tremlett.

Udal named in the squad!!

Very surprised with that considering the youth policy they have gone with in recent years.

No place for Shah or Joyce but I guess they dont want to take batsmen on tour for a few months and not play them.

I'm not surprised at Udal at all. If Giles breaks down you need an experienced spinner in form, and I'm sure 35 wickets at 18 a piece and a summer bowling with Shane Warne at Hampshire will have helped.

I'm not sure about Loudon. It is a bold move, although it is at the expense of another batsmen.

The problem there is the poor Ashes form of Bell - if that continues we will have to change the batting line-up and dynamic of the team - I would have preferred Shah who's had the best season of his life and can come in at 4 if required.

But the handling of Bell is a positive move by the selectors. The team is winning so they do not need to make drastic changes and they are sticking by him for the minute. He will come good.
