I don't really drive that much, so I can't say I've noticed, but a couple of friends were telling me that petrol / diesel round here is now about £1-09 - £1.10 / litre

I do know that more and more people are now putting 'red' diesel in their diesel vehicles (25p a litre) - espcially HGVs, but also normal family cars too. How long before there is another mass backlash against the cost of fuel - or are we unlikely to ever see the like of that again?

Unlikely I'd say. All part of a massive government plot to make us squeal about prices, congestion etc. to push us to accept road tolls.

Watch this space.

It can only be a good thing if it forces people to use their cars if they really need to. I do feel sorry for the tradesman etc. who rely on their vehicles to carry out their business though.

That is the most stupid thing you have ever said.It won't just be the tradesmen affected but every single person. All companies will have to push up there prices ie all supermarkets, public transport ie taxis, buses, planes, retail stores etc etc.You need to think a bit more about what you said. What about the poor granny who lives in the sticks who relies on her car to collect her pension which is about 8 miles to a post office and no public transport? Why is the rest of Europe so far cheaper apart from Norway? The trouble with you Paul your to green for your own good without putting to much thought into it.Couriers will have to up there prices infact you can probably safely say all business will.

When fuel goes up everything else goes up. Food is taken to the supermarket by lorries so that will go up as the supermarkets aren't going to shoulder the cost themselves.
Bus fares will go up for the same reason.

Apart from 17 year old boys in Citroen Saxos with plastic body kits and little blue lights in their washer jets, I don't know many people who simply drive about just for the badness of it. Most people use their cars for those little inconveniences in life like getting to and from their jobs, buying food and visiting friends and families. Yet the private motorist is singled out as they know we have no option but to keep paying out and paying out.

All the while, the airlines, for example, pay not one penny on aviation fuel, yet the amount just one jet burns simply on taxi-ing from the gate to the end of the runway is probably more than I will put in my car in my whole lifetime.

Petrol prices are creeping up to 99p a litre and with diesel at more than £1.03 a litre a lot of vehicle users must be pissed off with the amount of duty on petrol/diesel. Considering it was only a few years ago the Government were promoting the use of diesel as an alternative to petrol and they incentivised car users to buy a diesel vehicle with lower prices on fuel which is now dearer than petrol. I know you get more mpg with a diesel but we are all being ripped off. What is strange is that the pump prices in Grimsby are dearer than in Scunthorpe and Hull even though the oil refinery is only up the road near Immingham.

The minimum fare in Brighton is £1.70. I get a monthly season ticket.

What on earth has Gordon Brown got to do with the global price of oil?

Mind you , with B&H buses you knew the fares were going up whenever a shiny new timetable book was published

I must admit to thinking that it was only in the UK that we got hit with high petrol prices, but a trip to Spain and Germany showed otherwise, both were only slightly cheaper than here.
If you reduce the tax on petrol you need to raise the tax revenue elsewhere, so where?

 I wasn't being serious. I did study fuel prices and their effect on the economy.

My only gripe is towards those that use their car when there are plenty of other options, but unfortunately the price levels do not solely affect them.

I watched Newsnight last year and fuel was a big discussion point. I think it was agreed that if you pay £1 for a litre, only 30p of it is NOT tax. That is a hell of a lot of money going into the coffers, but where does it all get spent? Not to mention the increase in VAT on other products and so on, as you mentioned.

I am not some kind of eco-hippy, Spencer. I realise that cars are a fact of life, but there is plenty of unnecessary use and the car industry has been very slow to sort out their harmful emmissions. There is plenty of money in there, but not enough action. Unfortunately the govt. and previous govt. did/do not have the balls to tackle the problems. They are in a win/win situation at the moment.

Aside from that, there was a report the other day stating that fumes are at dangerous levels in Brighton. Particularly the City centre, which is mainly buses!

My weekly ticket costs £7.50 , Stagecoach cant afford to raise the price anymore as the majority of the working population here (66%+) are on minimum wage.

Still about 75 of your pence a litre here. there's virtually no market for petrol stations in Northern Ireland anymore as a result

Presumably this is a Monthly SAVER ticket. It costs £50 if bought online and gives unlimited travel throughout an area from Steyning to Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells.

Even if Yorkie only uses it to go to and from work, that's about £1.25 a journey, or about 13 pence a mile for travel between Newhaven and Brighton. Much cheaper than running a car and paying for parking in central Brighton.

That's the one Lord B. I pay £50 but get it from St James St post office cos the One Stop shop at the bottom is always too busy in my lunch break.
There isn't enough parking space for me at work anyway.

The most worrying thing is that oil is a very versatile and precious commodity, with a wide and essential role to play in the manufacture of plastics, fibres etc, and we are wasting it by using it as a fuel source.

As for where does the money go from fuel revenue, well a lot of it goes/went funding an unnecessary war in the middle east to secure oil supplies for global corporations and help re-elect George Bush on a patriot ticket in 2005
