As a 40% tax payer, and with approx 70% of the cost of petrol being tax/duty... I have to earn £1.67 to buy 30p worth of petrol!

That is approx £6 of tax paid to buy one gallon of petrol... which takes me approx 40 miles... so that is a tax cost of 15p per mile for petrol alone (not including road tax, insurance premium tax, tax on the purchase of my car etc... etc...).

A charge on road use perhaps?

A possibility but aren't fuel charges essentially that anyway?

As they can now check if you have insurance and MOT on computer, I don't see the point of road tax any more and think that should be tagged onto fuel duty.

As is record spending on the NHS and education. Tax revenue doesn't go straight into MP's pockets you know.

No it doesn't - they have to claim it in expenses first!

What about taxing other things that could be seen as damaging to the environment instead of just cars, such as a tax charge on carrier bags, especially as they are made from oil, and often found stuck in trees, in lakes and ponds etc... Maybe if it was high enough it would encourage people to start to re-use and start to get people out of this throw away culture we live in today!

But that wouldn't take into account how they spend their money, so in this case non drivers would be paying for drivers.

Most people don't drive for FUN - they drive because they have to, because public transport (outside of a few city centres) is a disgrace.

It is AS necessary for many people to drive as it is for them to buy food or use the toilet or breathe air. It is a tax on many individuals who have little or no choice. Otherwise you would see changes in driving habits by such swingeing tax hikes - but unfortunately we don't have any viable alternatives.

Is that in the same way that people who never have children still pay tax, which is used to give to others in benefits, even if they are very rich.

Some people may struggle financially, for example, those who may be very low wage earners, (min. wage) who, for example, live outside major towns, may find that the car is the only way to get to work, yet don't get any financial help and therefore find it difficult to make ends meet when fuel costs increase.
