Bloke who runs that shop isn’t right! Its 15-18 quid in cuckfield for that. Cost of living crisis.
You refer to " Shrinkflation ", the ultimate examples of which are Wagon Wheels and Cadbury's Creme eggs.Until recently my daughter worked for the local chippy which does good business - always big queues at weekends and not far from the seafront so plenty of summer trade.
Talking to the owner, he told me that his wholesale prices for the fish, potatoes and even things like sausages keep going up and there is only so much he can absorb before he has to put his own prices up. Energy bills are also hitting him hard. He knows a lot of his customers are pensioners so tries to keep costs down but ultimately, it is his business and he has to make a living.
He has just stopped opening on Tuesdays as the energy costs don't make it cost effective for him to open.
The comment about smaller portions is something you see across food and retail now. Pack sizes in supermarkets are getting smaller so it doesn't look like prices have gone up as much. In restaurants, portion control is very much a thing. You might find that your pizza has slightly less topping now - for example, taking off a couple of bits of pepperoni won't make much difference to you but across 100 pizzas it all adds to the savings.
For my Friday fish lunch I went to a place in Lancing.
Small chips.
Small cod.
Mushy peas.
£9.50
Generous portions, I’ll give them that but that’s pricey, eh? I’m sure it’s the same across the South but in York recently I enjoyed some of the best fish n chips I’ve ever had for £4
What do you pay for your fish supper? Or indeed any takeaway food?
That is a piss take.View attachment 160795I see your £9-50 - cheap as chips. In queen of suburbia land its over £15.
Ordered over the phone without checking the price, couldn't believe the cost when picking it up.

Mushy peas too runny as well. Large portions of fish but ffs there's no way I'd pay over £15 per meal at a chippy knowingly. Sad thing is it wasn't just the one portion. ShockingThat is a piss take.
There was a survey before Covid that said that, on average, families had 3 takeaways as week. I wonder what it is now? We have only ever had one a month at most.I used to get a takeaway twice a week. FnC on a Friday, Chinese or Indian on Sunday night.
Now I get as an occasional treat. Once a month tops.
I think you and me both know why the price of cod is going through the roof, but I'm not bitingFor my Friday fish lunch I went to a place in Lancing.

There's a time and a plaice for puns. This isn't it.Nearly 30 posts on a fish-related thread and not a pun to be seen?
For God's hake!
Fair enough. I'll go back to the prawn sites. There's a time and a plaice for puns. This isn't it.
I hope that you did not go to Mr Chips, I could tell you a thing or two about that plaice...For my Friday fish lunch I went to a place in Lancing.

Halibut for £13 is a bargain, unless it’s the size of a fish finger. Never thought I’d see Halibut on the menu in a chippy.View attachment 160795I see your £9-50 - cheap as chips. In queen of suburbia land its over £15.
