I noticed that Asda have reduced the price of petrol by 2p litre, and other supermarkets say they will follow suit, but not diesel as they say they cant, so why is this and why the big difference in price between petrol and diesel.

dont know the answers but some factors could be that diesel cost more to refine, odd but true. i think it might be that it cost more to refine the low sulfur stuff required for road use. also there maybe refinary issues with how much capacity is available for diesel vs petrol right now. theres also more tax on diesel, which accounts for higher price though not the amount it can change.

Asda passes on the price reductions when the price they pay drops , the other supermarkets and petrol stations then follow suit but if they had their own way would keep the prices the same even though they were paying less so as to increase profit margin.

Tesco are usually the last to reduce the price and they also charge different prices at stores and I have noticed the one in Durrington , near my sister in law, is usually one of the dearest.

Asda have a national pricing policy whereas the other supermarkets have regional pricing which allows them to match the prices of the local petrol stations and vice versa.

I get a weekly fuel price report from Shell - who tell me (this week) that the price is falling.

Not a lot, but it's going down.

So the possibility of another 1p a litre off before Xmas before the 3p levy is introduced in January ???

I seem to remeber that when diesel was first becoming populkar for cars as opposed to tractors it was because it was priced cheaper than petrol, to encourage people to buy diesel cars. But pretty soon afterwards it became MORE expensive than petrol, not less. And stayed that way.

But diesel is cheaper here than petrol

Nearly every country in the world sells diesel at a cheaper price than petrol except for the uk.

this is because there was a big fuss over the polluting effects of the emissions at ground level, so the government of the day decided to be very green and ecological and add more tax to discourage use/pay for the health effects. theres a cynical view as expressed by Cadiz that its to make up for the losses in revenue by the uptake over petrol, but im pretty sure the diesel became good an dpopular after the green tax issue.

As with gas and elecricity its all to do with the ridiculous target that this country has set to reduce emissions. Yes all the utility companies should be shot at dawn along with the fuel companies, but successive governments have stood by and let them get away with it, because the less we use the less emissions we give out. The government is prepared to let pensioners choose between heat or food and families fall into fuel poverty. They have said for years that they will do something, but still nothing has been done. When Cameron got the big 6 together I thought we were getting somewhere, but he just said everyone will have to switch to the cheapest supplier when they are all more or less the same and his latest policy is shockingly ill thought through, and they will probably put more tax on soon. what a clown that man is. The french government sets the price for their utility companies, why cant we? and EDF is a french company.

The regulatory body is pathetic and in the pockets of the government and utility companies.

Diesel used to be far cheaper than petrol, ok so there are more diesel cars now, but why is it now more expensive than petrol.

Its all a conspiracy and pure greed and we are the ones to pay.

Nothing angers me more than this, it makes my piss boil. But what do we, the public, do about it, we put the kettle on and have a nice cup of tea.

Why oh why oh why do we put up with it when we are so obviously being conned and ripped off.
I am not condoning violence but the poll tax was reversed and the fuel/gas and electricity issue is far worse in my opinion.

theres no conspiracy, its all in plain sight. its just everyone has short memories. the environmental lobby said we had to change to save the planet, the power companies said that'll cost, we said thats fine just save the planet. now the bill is here and everyones looking round the table to work out who ordered the organic salmon and free range locally produced asparagus, forgetting that we all did. EDF had some detail in their announment of their price rise which notes that the cost of distribution has gone up 9%, which accounts for most of the overall price rather than the actual fuel. this apparently goes towards funding the infrasturcture to support the (subsidised) wind farms we asked for.
