Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff, as well as a smaller number of people from our Hale End Academy which we have also temporarily closed as a precaution.

We expect those who did not have close contact with Mikel to return to work in the coming days. In the meantime our Colney and Hale End training centres will undergo a deep clean and our other club sites are operating as normal.

Managing director Vinai Venkatesham said: “The health of our people and the wider public is our priority and that is where our focus is. Our thoughts are with Mikel who is disappointed but in good spirits. We are in active dialogue with all the relevant people to manage this situation appropriately, and we look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows.”

Head of football Raul Sanllehi added: “Mikel and the full first-team squad, players and staff, will be fully supported, and we look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows. Obviously Mikel’s full recovery is the priority now for us all.”

We will work with Public Health England on the next steps in regard to our facilities and staff, and with the Premier League, Football Association and relevant clubs around our forthcoming matches in the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup.

It is clear we will not be able to play some fixtures on their currently scheduled dates. We will update supporters who have tickets for forthcoming games with more information as soon as possible.

We are now working to trace any other people who have had recent close contact with Mikel. We will let them know what has happened and they should follow the NHS guidance which is likely to recommend self-isolation.

Mikel said: “This is really disappointing but I took the test after feeling poorly. I will be at work as soon as I’m allowed.”

Surely bound to be suspension of the season from tomorrow. Time will tell where that leads

Anyone getting overly concerned about how and when to conclude the football season has probably failed to fully grasp the enormity of the global health, economic and social crisis that is currently unfolding.

True but this relatively trivial issue helps to understand the complexity of life and how a domino effect is started. Sometimes examples can help to understand how robust or non robust our societal edifices are.

And it is important to think too that a very wide panoply of outcomes is till possible. Merkel says 70% German population will get CV, a German scientist thinks it will max at 40k, a difference of 54,960,000 cases.

The football issue is slightly different to most others as it is critically a timing problem and while there are other far more important timing issues like school exams, most of CV issues will unwind over time, with very differing degrees of health, economical and social pain and suffering.

I can understand the reluctance to close schools and so on, as explained by the scientists and government tonight (people will be enthusiastic and adhere to the guidance for a while, but then get bored and go out and about at just the worst time) - but this doesn't apply to large (500+) gatherings. If they are banned and not held, then people can't gradually drift back to them.

I must say I'm a little surprised that they haven't already cancelled matches - but looks inevitable now.

Arsenal declared that nobody had the virus in the week when they cancelled the City game. So, they were a) lying b) only just got it but symptoms don't come out in 2 days c) they had it and didn't declare it...

If Arteta and possibly others have had it fir 5 to 14 days, then this is going to spread massively very quickly.

The open school advice is also based on advice that the alternative would mean countless kids being placed with elderly grandparents each day, whilst their parents work, enhancing the risk to the most vulnerable demographic. When they should be self-isolating.

And because NHS staff with kids would become unavailable.

Since olympiakos arsenal have played portsmouth and west ham so surely if it's related to the contact with their chairman it has the potential to affect those clubs

d) Arteta showed symptons, so got tested, found positive.

You only get tested if:
You show symptons AND have been in contact with someone that has tested positive.
OR
You show symptoms AND have recently arrived from an affected area.
