[Football] Premier League / Football League attempts to finish the season

I don't want to be jumped on for starting another thread, but at this moment do you think that the current season will be finished?
(Not, what you think SHOULD happen).
I was fairly certain that it would be cancelled, but I'm now beginning to realise just how determined the Premier League are to get it restarted and completed.

The PL and UEFA appear very determined. The certainty of all of NSC that the season would be null and voided, was only supporters wishful thinking. The powers that be appear resolute that behind closed doors football will be resuming sooner rather than later to complete current competitions and then get 2020/21 underway.

A follow on question to yours - when will fans next to able to attend Amex matches in large numbers?

It’ll be August 2021, or more likely August 2022, imho.

The right decision, well made. Germany have led the way in their response and we need to copy their testing numbers to fill the public with confidence that the media's fearmongering can finally be put to one side. I'm sure they'll start dampening down the rhetoric as well now and promote the reintegration of people into the world. When the media are ready to report it's time to get back to life, it will happen.

But not before.

If they ever re-started this 19/20 season behind closed doors, apart from the few who are probably happy watching paint dry as well as empty, soulless stadiums...... I think it would turn even more football supporters away from the overpaid footballers for ever.

It’ll never happen, but I think that my preference for the PL would be:
1. Open a transfer window from 1 June.
2. Resume the 2019/20 season only when spectators are permitted. Yes, this might not be until 2021 or later. Close the transfer window shortly before the recommencement of matches.
3. Make a decision regarding the start and format of the next season only when the 2019/20 recommencement date is known.
4. If, and when, socially acceptable, hold a behind closed doors competition in the intervening period before the 2019/20 season recommences (but also allowing for a short break between this new competition and the recommencement of the 2019/20 season).

I see 2. as being the fairest way of resolving the current season. 4. would placate the TV companies, give the public something to watch (on TV) and keep players match fit, without materially affecting what’s left of the integrity of the 2019/20 season.

You see, I disagree with this a bit, and the ongoing demonisation of football has also annoyed me. That's not to say that football is perfect - it's far from it - but it does seem to have become a bit of a scapegoat.

Like it or not, the Premier League is a complex multi-billion pound international business. Like all businesses it will be trying to make plans to allow it to continue operations when it is able to do so. There will be multiple plans based on many different scenarios and variables.

However, unlike most big businesses, which are broadly left to get on with it by themselves, there is a whole industry that exists to report on and document Premier League activities. That massive industry has also come to a standstill, pretty much, and about the only story available to them is "when will Premier League football be back?" As a result, the PL, and its clubs are under a level of scrutiny that very few other businesses are.

I've seen no suggestion that the Premier League nor its clubs think it's bigger and more important than the health crisis that is going on right now, but that's not to say as responsible businesses they shouldn't be trying to make plans for how they will continue operations as and when that is possible.

Is it about money? Partly yes but, again, it's a big business. They'd be stupid to not be trying to make plans for all eventualities they may face.

Well said. Football is an entire industry of its own which goes far beyond 22 players on the pitch, also supporting jobs at the clubs, their suppliers, broadcasters, transport companies and more. Behind closed doors matches wouldn't solve all those issues but, like every other sector, it is entirely understandable that it's exploring every available option to get up and running as soon as possible.

Nine games left. Some football to watch on the telly. Really not going to sit around going "facking hell, I thought Murray was a down-to-earth man of the people but actually he's scum and I've never felt more distant from footballers" if they can conclude this season.

I don't miss football that much when I think about it and football without fans is pish etc etc. But I'd rather have something than an indefinite nothing. Even though it'll probably send us down.
