Sorry, but this is nonsense.

The good teams actually win a few, and secure the draw when they need to.

When the Arsenal invincible won the league, they actually drew 12 of their 38 games. Chelsea won only 2 less matches, and it was their 7 defeats that prevented the title going to final day.

Hmmmm, well clearly drawing is better than losing yes and yes that Arsenal team did draw a lot of games.

But it's not nonsense.

P38 W19 D0 L19 pts57 is obviously better than W0 D38 L0 pts38.

Extreme examples, but in reality the teams who score and concede lots of goals and are have a mindset where they are prepared to risk defeat to gain a win are going to find themselves higher in the league than low scoring draw specialists

Possibly (though I'd argue that winning NINETEEN matches is hardly 'a few').

However you miss the point that 'losing a few' also hands maximum points to your opposition / rivals. Drawing does not.

It does and this can have an effect, for example last night's Newcastle v Norwich game. It's foreseeable that the draw could have an effect at the end of the season.

Though take any random opponent and the strong probability is that that at the end of the season you won't be close enough in the league that the difference in points between winning and drawing against them will affect your league position against them.

What will make a difference is the huge advantage being able to find wins gives you in a 3 points for a win system

Almost too obvious a point to make, but with 3 points for a win, a win is twice as good as a loss is bad.

There's a strong argument that there's no such a thing as a good draw and that the fact that the fact that football fans and managers are happy with a point from a difficult game is just down to innate loss aversion in their psychological make up

The teams that do well, win a few and lose a few.

Another even more obvious point to make, is that if you draw all of your games, then you still stand an excellent chance of avoiding relegation.

So l suppose it depends on the ambition of the club really.

Managing to draw a dozen or so games a season means you only need to win 8 or 9 to stay up. Winning games in the EPL is tough....so all those draws are, on the whole, very useful.

0-0 draw should be 1 point, score draw should be 2.

You could have a match where both defences are magnificent that ends up 0-0, or a match where both defences make a series of errors but the profligate forwards can only manage one goal apiece. Why should the teams in the second match get one point more than the first match?

I think the present system is fine, but if you wanted to tinker with it you could take a leaf out of ice hockey's book with their Overtime Win and Overtime Loss. When a match is tied at the end of 90 minutes a period of extra time is played, and the winning team get two points, while the losing team retains their one point.

The threat of losing out on that second point but still retaining the single point could motivate teams to be that little bit more attacking, especially in the closing quarter.
