Phew Newcastle fans must be relieved..Paul Scholes thinks they’ll be ok

Which is funny seeing as a poor United side, missing Pogba and Cavani just beat them in second gear.

If I were a barcode I’d be seriously worried

But she did have two specialists alongside her.
She was able to comment on the game as an experienced former international player.

Your criteria would probably have denied Ian Wright becoming the relaxed, insightful pundit that he is now.
It's too easy to just stick with the polished educated gems.

Let's have a mixture of personalities, backgrounds and educations.
We don't need Emily Maitlis alongside John Murray.

The same principle applies to 606 imo. For me the best partnership last year was Ali Bruce-Ball with Chris Sutton. Because you’ve got a highly competent professional broadcaster you can get the best out of Sutton. This year they have Robbie Savage with Sutton and for me it’s vastly inferior.

I don’t believe we’re going down but it seriously grates that the front line hasn’t been upgraded, especially with Murray departing. Maupay nor Connelly are the answer, they can play well on their day but they are not going to propel Albion into mid table in the Premier League.
Albion are a Man City light team, trying to play the whole team game, not just a few star players, which is why Pep likes Potter’s methods. Problem as we know has been the trouble hitting the net because of this lack of a quality frontline. I hope we have been practicing hitting shots with accuracy and power over this last week, we need to decimate Palarse tomorrow, throwing them into the relegation mix along with Burnley & Newcastle.

How dare you! Maguire and Mings is Southgate's number one defensive pairing, is it not? Although, now that Stones has finally learnt that he is supposed to be a defender and not Johann Cruyff, that may change by the summer.
Yeah I agree, Stones and Maguire unfortunately the likely pairing!

Two 'English language' specialists?

Wright was a well-liked character in the game. Nobody was at beating down the door at the BBC hoping Carney would get a chance.

I see she's described as a "sports journalist" on Wiki.

Why do you think Carney gets to train on national radio at least three times a week, rather than learning the ropes on local radio as professional broadcaster would be expected to do?

Every time I think "that's not a penalty", it's given, with the commentariat meekly agreeing. What happened to the crackdown on diving?

This will be a non-contact sport in 5 years. Is that really what people want?

I'd rather have full contact.

You know what? I've started watching 'The Big Match Revisited' on Saturday mornings now. The football is much more enjoyable.

He’s literally brushed the top of his boot at most, Rashford realises he isn’t going to get a clean shot so throws himself to the floor, Grealish style. It’s pathetic, it worries me that any contact now warrants a penalty when we all know Rashford easily could have stayed on his feet there.

The key is in the feet of the player. He takes another solid steps then ‘falls over’. The comms were very blasé about it being a clear pen. But because it’s Man U they won’t make a big deal about it. There wasn’t much contact, but that’s the way the games gone I’m afraid. Yet they overturn Connollys one at the Amex despite more contact...!

By specialists I meant experienced commentators who are specialists in the job they do.

Overall you're right that there are plenty of people better than her, but if we consistently took that attitude there would be a huge chunk of people that would never have a chance.
Cricket have managed it with Isha Guha, Alison Mitchell and Ebony Rainford-Brent. Football needs to give more women a chance also.
Kelly Cate and Gabby Yorath are very good and it's great to see more women being given a chance.

Funnily enough, "how did this this person get a job on television/radio?" Is one of the first questions I ask myself whenever any of the absolute cretins paid to talk about football opens their mouths. Normally immediately before "where's the button to shut them up?"

If football punditry was held to actual standards there'd be about 3 left, and football coverage would be improved for the blessed silence they'd leave behind.

Carney's not good, but she's no worse than most of them.

I know what you meant.

But actually, she's one of two on air during the match, so she gets a lot of air-time.

I know many criticise all women and say they don't have an insight of the men's game. I'm not suggesting that at all.

I hear Lucy Ward is decent. There are many, many worse male pundits than Alex Scott.

My argument is that to be on the radio for extended periods you need to good with words - and Carney isn't.

Overall you're right that there are plenty of people better than her but if we consistently took that attitude there would be a huge chunk of people that would never have a chance.

She's being given more than a 'chance' thought - she's on multiple times a week, and across multiple channels.

I bet there are former women players out there who are way more articulate. Give them a chance!

There are pleny of bad males for sure.

But you need to make a disctinction between a co-commentator and a pundit, especially on radio where the former gets a lot of air time.

Pundits you can normally switch off, skip through etc.

It's impossible to ignore a co-commentator on the radio, so I'm listening less and less.

This weekend could have been far worse than it was.

West Brom and Burnley both dropped two points.
Fulham winning wasn't ideal, but they were playing the bottom team (who are now fully out of it)
Saints got a good point, but only a point and are well in reach.
And Newcastle lost, keeping them below us.

All up to us now. This Albion side are ready to push hard to move up the table. Come on the Albion!!

My opinion of the commentators and co-commentators on TV is largely the same as the above. The best I can say is that I don't mind the commentators on MOTD because they're only on for about 10minutes each.

Former players shouldn't be within a mile of a radio broadcast, at least not during play. As Change at Barnham said above, when the action's being communicated purely through the voice of the broadcaster you need a specialist commentator to do it.

Last post from me on the subject, but just to note that the all-male commentary team for Liverpool v Everton on TalkSport was awful tool. (Listened in the car, but not for long)

No-one needs a co-commentator representing each team, especially when one sounds like he's on a walkie talkie.

Win tomorrow, go up two places, seven points clear - it will have been a pretty good weekend. As you say - it's all up to / down to us.

Barely being able to construct a sentence and not knowing the meaning of words would be excusable if the pundit had something interesting to say. Carney really doesn't. Today one of her most insightful contributions was about Cancelo playing in midfield when Citeh attack- that's been done to death for weeks now.
