Why do we only seem to play non-league teams pre -season. Years back we had teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Notts Forest, West Ham play us down at the Goldstone.

We are unable to play friendlies at Withdean - due to planning(?) and financial constraints - the big clubs are not keen to play friendlies on their own turf. Hence we are stuck with lower league teams.

Didn't we play Leicester at home when they were doing quite well? A squirrel attacked Nathan Jones.

We also had Forest (right at the start). I wonder if the planning conditions changed when we extended our stay...? If not, we should pull out all stops to get a big club down here. Would it be too difficult to get someone like a Chelsea XI?

We can only play games at home from August owards, the game against Leicester was a mid-week game in early August if my memory serves me right.

I think it was Paul Brooker. It put him off and he lost possession of the ball. I seem to remember Micky Adams saying that when Paul Brooker was up against that squirrel, there was only ever going to be one winner.

Charltons pre-season is pretty poor now that they are relegated from the premiership, they had to pull out of a tournement because of it and now find themselves playing non-league sides, gillingham away and are at home to sporting braga but thats only probabily because one of there ex-players manages them now.

Presonally i quite like pre-season as the weather is nice and can normally drink during alot of the non-league opponents, also don't forget 4 of this years matchs are being played because of agreements with signings and reserves playing at worthing

Would have though that half the team will play on the 17th and the over half the next day at Billericay. im pretty sure that we have done that for the last few years.

I might pop along to that Lewes v Southampton game

The Reading game's the only one of any value. OK, it's a testimonial, but it counts. Well if any of the current team play, that is. All the rest of the pre-seasons are just an extended trainng session for the players and an excuse for the fans to drink beer from plastic glasses on the steps and terraces and praise the false prophets that are the trialists who score a hat-trick against Worthing and who ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS turn out to be deeply shite.
