The problem with replacing Ankergren is that he is pretty key to our passing game from the back. Any replacement would need to be a better keeper and come up to speed quickly with our passing game.

Painter does looks the weakest link at the moment as he has no pace and will be targeted by any half decent wingers. His lack of pace should not have come as a suprise this season though.

The problem with Barnes is that he is being asked to play a lot in midfield. To my mind he is similar in style to CMS except he doesn't work as hard. As a front two partnership I dont see it working particularly as in this division we spend more time defending and need an outlet ball sometimes. Neither Barnes or CMS can hold the ball up and any defensive long ball up front comes straight back. Therefore we either need a striker who can occasionally hold the ball up (possibly Hoskins) or play 5 proper midfielders (along the lines of two wide, two defensive and one roaming - Vicente) to allow us to dominate the midfield and pass our way out of trouble.

In summary we could possibly get away with just replacing Painter - but other areas of concern are the keeper and a CF like Glen.

Away from the defending issue I would like to see us field a consistent midfield as this will help to protect the back four.

Also would like to see Hoskins start a game to see if he can link up play with CMS and offer us a more mobile outlet.

More or less agree...apart from GK...our passing game is hardly rocket science. I doubt it would take any new keeper that long to get up to speed

Here
Gus needs to be clear with the players themselves where they stand otherwise moral in the whole team could plummet. He has an early challenge on his hands and it's good that this has emerged after only 10 games. But we're still in 5th position and we have the next few weeks to get this sorted before too much damage is done + the international break has come at a very handy time. We're gonna be OK!!

charming, please tell me? are you the next poet laureate? I only ask as your obviously the eloquent type. In answer to your question, yes we do have a couple of boards of our own actually, but for some reason of late, there hasn't been any weed fans on the away fans bit (I wonder why?) So I thought I would come and have chat with some in there own back yard (if the mountain won't come to Mohammed etc etc). I would be interested to see if,like some of the more intelligent weed fans on here, whether or not you could actually comment on what I said. Which in essence is basically " suck it up buttercup". You've lost a few games, so what ? you still have a great stadium a good manager, and the makings of a good team.

The fact that half the stadium went home when we went in front went along way to prove my point about the over expectations of some of your so called fans, I actually felt sorry for the proper fans of Brighton who went to the Withdean every week.

Don't worry mate; we've had so many Palace kids on here acting like complete cocks that one or two of our lot will react at any Palace fan coming on, regardless of how sensible or not their comments are. Long-term Palace posters like Croydonbloke and paulie seem to get on okay on here; 5 Zero seems a reasonable poster as well, despite the delightful name he posts under. I love the rivalry and the anti-Palace songs, as I'm sure you like giving it back in return - I've started a few in my time, and one time my old man virtually had to drag me back into the car on the way from Selhurst to my uncle's house, but such things as the REMF and your bloke under the bus show that rivalry is where it should stay.

Regarding your comments, I think you're right, the great start made some of us think the side is better than it actually is. All of us that went to Cardiff were absolutely buzzing, and it was hard not to think we were going to have a special season. Blackpool I think brought some of us back to reality. I take your point about not buying in panic, but I think there are areas of our team that need strengthening. Compared with where we were 5 years ago though, I'd take this season any day, although I'd have taken a bore 0-0 against you lot, even if we'd drawn rather than won a couple of other games.

For what its worth I spoke to CMS after the match - his view was that the team played ok and were passing the ball around well....

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he. He's hardly likely to say "we were rubbish and couldn't string 2 passes together".

Agree entirely with previous poster about not having a settled midfield. It's not been helped by the injuries and I think that once we can get all the niggles and knocks out of the way, Gus will have a much better idea of what the best combination is.

I think we need four loanees:

Keeper (Cover and to push Ankergran)
CB
Combative Midfielder
Defensive Midfielder

Would take a striker also to keep the pressure up front for places ... as a bonus not essential
