It’s too depressing on Down at the MAC

makes the miserable beggars on here look like the audience at a comedy festival.
It’s a shame to see a club like your’s sliding back down the leagues, and yes I’m sure your fans can reach new depths of misery!

I love Gus, and the way it ended never changed that for me. Was delighted to see his reception yesterday, and also the little tap of the heart. I know he regrets how it ended. In another parallel we would have won that Palace game, got promoted and Gus would have been our Brian Clough. Sadly we didn't and he didn't have the patience that Bloom and Barber have had to get us where we are. Doesn't change the fact that he totally revamped the footballing side of our club in very quick time. Top top man.

He was brilliant as a League One manager but too fearful as a Championship one Imo. I remember some pretty frustrating games when caution came before looking to win the game at Championship level, especially against better sides. Apart from keeping Sunderland up against the odds what else has he done since he left the Albion? I am not convinced he would have made a great Albion manager in the PL, with his ego and touting himself at every opportunity I doubt he’d have done as well as CH results wise

Nope, sorry

Apart from Hereford half time - I have never ever felt as sick to my stomach than after losing to P*l*ce at home in the play offs, sitting in the car before a three hour drive home and then finding what motormouth had said.

He direspected the club - end of.
No respect for him whatsoever.

Hughton
Mullery
Adams

In that order - that's it I'm afraid.
Agree re feeling sick, that was probably the worst I've felt too, to be fair. But, still doesn't take away what he did for us.

Slade to Poyet, that was the moment that the new footballing philosophy of Brighton was born l think . It was almost like watching the birth of an entirely new club.
13 years ago today we beat Wycombe Wanderers away 2-5 to get us out of the relegation zone. He'd been here just five weeks.

The only thing I disagree with is your comment that Gus could have been our Brian Clough. I’m not sure BHA were ever in the market for that kind of figure. Tony wanted a management structure with himself and Barber making the decisions, including appointment of a coach rather than the old school football manager role wanted by Poyet. The two didn’t match and I think Tony has been proven correct. Poyet was the right man for the time but never had a future role at the club. That’s also the reason I disagree with comments above about the change at the club being Slade to Poyet. That change gave us profile but it wasn’t any part of the long term structure we see now.

Well for a start he isn't a top top man - proved that at the end.

Really sorry - but he wasn't a good enough manager as has been subsequently proved.

Had a top six budget in League 1 - from a bottom six that Slade had.
The football was sublime in League one, helped by the investment on Greer, Calde, Painter, Lua Lua, Bridcutt etc and was probably my favourite period following the Albion.
We were "fecking brilliant"!!
Then he binned Murray and bought CMS😃😃
🤦‍♂️

He is no Brian Clough, honestly.

Did brilliantly (with a better budget), then well again, then ok, then imploded!

I loved him too - but then he did what he did - and that was that.
Little tap of the heart - sheesh, how easily people forget.

Sorry Giraffe

If Poyet hadn't got us out of the relegation scrap in his first few weeks, we would've been in League One going into the Amex. We got promoted very well and even into the playoffs. Very few promoted clubs do that. Ok, we didn't win the playoffs but we didn't with Chris Hughton either. We got up automatically and then two years later sacked Hughton. That's the fate of a lot of managers. It was all about money and the £2 million release clause.

Fancied CMS over GM. Broke up a promotion strike force pairing. Was flabbergasted and gutted when Murray went (to Palace). That was Gus’s sliding door moment. Sure he knows that too.

Yes, Poyet was needed at that time. Fulfilled his remit and it was a really enjoyable period in the club’s history. Those Peterborough and Charlton away games felt amazing (I was at both) and nothing I have said diminishes that experience. He just wasn’t a part of the bigger picture. There was just no point in clashing with Tony’s vision so he just had to move on.

I always thought his brand of football suited Withdean with it's small playing area. Short passing and quick bursts into the opponents penalty area. A 10 yard pass from the centre circle often put our forwards in good positions and luckily we had the players to put the ball in the net. The football was exiting.

The Amex is a totally different prospect and his short passing game became ineffective and it became hard to watch. There were long periods of backwards and sideways passing and I think the team lost it's way. Poyet didn't seem to adapt his tactics to suit the new pitch, so I'm glad he went.

Set us on a pathway and identity that we’re still enjoying today. We became a progressive passing, attacking team brave on the ball under Gus and despite a couple of bumps we still very much have that in our DNA. Think Gus was also essential to Bloom’s development as an owner, the balance between director-technical-recruitment-management appears in a nice equilibrium these days.

Just far enough away from LDC
The glass ceiling comment was because he wanted Van Dyke, and was told by PB he cost too much. That was part of the fallout.
Yep, Van Dijk for 2m euros. Went for 3m to celtic then 8m to southampton and the rest is history

The quality of players he brought here was gobsmacking, he sold the club as well as anyone has. Vicente and Bridge were way way above what we were used to. CMS over Murray though…WTF?

Murray, Barnes and Wood was a damn good front 3 in League 1, why that was broken up is beyond me? Didn't they all get to the Prem before we did?

Combination of Poyet not being overly keen & the club taking the wrong approach to budgets were the main problem

To be fair to GP we were all really excited when we got CMS, it was a massive statement signing for us, particularly as West Ham and Leicester were both in for him.
