[Albion] Potters tactics

I was interested to read on the BBC's commentary on the Chelsea game that our erstwhile manager made a tactical substitution long before half time as the midfield was being overrun but the Mancs. I must admit that I only attend home games but I struggle to remember Potter making a similar substitution when he was here however much it was cried out for. Substitutions never seemed to occur before 60 mins.Has he learned new tricks? In which case perhaps we should watch out next weekend

Didn’t the rules only change this season allowing 5 subs, at 3 opportunities ?

I don't think we saw a pre-half time tactical sub in his Brighton spell, no. Can't remember too many occasions where I felt it was really necessary though.

Probably also makes a bit of a difference when the bench is a lot stronger than it usually was in Brighton.

And the man binned was 65 million pound Cucurella

He was a spare part, though.

Potter's way of managing the Chelsea performance is....interesting. It was a crappy game yet an interesting watch.

My take home is he is not yet used to having an elite squad and the possibility of extreme disruptive play. He'll get it soon, though.

The point I was making is that he saw that something wasn't working and he changed it. Something that he didn't do when he was here

That’s not true. He often changed formations in games with the same players

Mate he did it all the time. It wasn’t always successful but it’s one of the things that separates him from most managers. During a game, he is way more interested in what the opposition are doing and shifts his tactics around that.

Potter got that change spot on, if he hadn't made that change I think United would have taken the lead.

I thought it was an interesting game, although boring. Very tactical, almost like a game of chess. ETH responded by shoring his midfield up after the change, and got Fred on shortly after.

Ehm... what?

I give you that he never made tactical subs in the 35th minute as far as I can remember, but you'll most likely never going to experience someone who switched formations and players as much as he did.

He did do it with us, however instead of using a sub, he told those already on the pitch to switch positions to accommodate the new tactics- I guess with Chelsea he has world class players on bench who he can bring on who specialise in that position instead of asking someone to adapt to a new position??

Agreed he changed formations but what we we re discussing was substitutions. I think there is something new in Potters tactics. Just google potter chelsea substitutions to see what I'm driving at. This didn't happen when he was here and perhaps people are right when they say it wasn't necessary. It just happens it wasn't my view of things

Like I alluded to in my previous post - I think it’s because he has an embarrassment of riches on his bench - world class game changers !

I also think he is trying to keep them all happy by giving them game time.

Look back at our games end of last season and this season - he pretty much stuck with the same 11 - something he wasn’t known for however it yielded the best results!!

He is still learning at Chelsea - dealing with world class multi millionaire players - it’s a totally new experience and will test his coaching abilities. It’s nothing like managing us and our squad.

He is unbeaten without really blowing teams away.

As I said, can’t wait till Saturday!!
